shadowsfall Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 (edited) My girlfriend of 6 months has been diagnosed with having severe food/tree/animal allergies. She has to follow a very strict diet/ avoid grass and many naturalistic areas and dogs. I really don't mind the diet and love that she eats so carefully and healthy but I'm very concerned about a future with someone with such extreme health issues. I love her to death and I don't want to come off as selfish at all but I've always envisioned myself with a dog at some point as well as healthy kids. We have talked about the idea of marriage in the future as well as kids and I worry about the possibility of passing it on to one. I've seen how this has affected her recently and I can't imagine putting a child through it. I have no allergies and she has very severe so I understand the probability is 50% of transmitting. From the research I've done I also understand that IF (50%) the child gets her gene that they do not inherit each specific allergy only the potential to become allergic to certain things. I wish I could come to grips with this sooner rather than later and I don't want to break up over a mere possibility that may or may not even come into play. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Els Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 That's just the way it is. Have YOU absolutely no hereditary diseases? Ever got gene profiled? Maybe both of you should get it done to aid your decision making. If you are normal, you most likely DO have genes predisposing to certain conditions (heart problems, etc), that you won't even KNOW you have until you're older and/or your family history is studied. If you really love someone, that's a silly reason to break up over.
