kind of lengthy so i apologize in advance. thanks for reading.

ok i'm curious. not sure if this goes on everywhere but it seems to be very common in my area.

temporary staffing agencies....it seems all the businesses are using them for 'permanent" employees. you got forklift drivers making $8.00 an hour through a temp service working right alongside someone making twice as much for the same job.

how can these places do this?

my last few jobs have been through different staffing agencies.

from my observations are this:

NO-benefits, vacation time, sick time, bonus time, health, dental, etc.

one place i worked for would offer a week of vacation after being employed with them for a year. but if the place doesn't hire you, you have to leave when the year is up. i didn't get my vacation because my year ran out. the next assignment would end in a year so it would be constantly resetting. just a hollow promise.

i'm not looking to get to take a 2 month vacation but can't even take 1 (one) day off without getting into trouble. (some temp services, you miss 1 day, you are gone, some might be 2-3 days and you are out, others might be a bit more lenient)

i just don't understand how they can expect so much of someone.....it is as if they are taking advantage of people because of the economy, etc.

i held off going to the dentist for more than a year so i wouldn't get in trouble, and waiting to see if i would get hired so i'd have insurance. i was out 1000 dollars to get some fillings and a root canal, crown,

so i'm not going to wait again. but this means that every six months to go get a checkup i have to take an attendance point and get in trouble. people shouldn't be punished for trying to take care of themselves.

and the last thing i will hit on. there are no promotions, no 'HEY THANKS FOR THE GOOD WORK'. for example say you are sourced out to COMPANY A for a year assignment making 10 bucks an hour. when that year is up you will get sent to COMPANY B and it is only9 bucks an hour. so it is like a demotion. the slate is wiped clean, it starts over, you have to prove yourself to a whole new set of managers.

again i apologize for the length. let me know what you think, if i'm crazy/spoiled, or if you are likeminded and in the same boat.

This is the way the job market is functioning at the moment.

Very few people in the common workplace sector have a career, any more. People have 'jobs'.

Nobody lasts the 45 years and gets the gold watch, any more.

People flit from job to job, and nowadays you've been with a firm "A long time" if you see through three Office Christmas Parties....

The way global employment is turning, we'll have Politics, The Military, the Police force, the medical profession, the legal profession and Food distribution.

The rest is all 'come and go'.....

it's sad that this is how things have ended up. my outlook is kind of bleak right now. can't afford to date, so ever having a family, house, it's out of the question.

I'm 54. don't own a property, (we rent), don't have a car, my mobile phone has just been cut off because I can't pay the bill, my house phone has been cut off for three months now for the same reason, we're expecting the Gas/electric bill any moment, I have £3.00 in the bank - and I have a full-time job!

Life is so much fun on the knife-edge!!

WHat is a temporary staffing agency?

I like your post about temporary staffing agencies. Every one can share their thoughts about it. According to me i think that Ensures employees have the ability to succeed at work. Reduce labor costs by increasing personnel, if necessary, to hit deadlines and cover vacation or other absences

When you go to a long term assignment via a staffing agency - you have to ask them:

Do you hire permanent employees after the agencies contract with them is expired? You need to know how long that is, get it from the agency.

The employer has the option of giving you a raise over and above what they pay the agency. Ask them if they will consider this after 3 months.

Many agencies do have vacation / personal time for their employees at long term assignments. They just dont tell you.

Employers no longer want to be responsible for insurance or unemployment so using an agency can be a less risky option that hiring. BUT most employers also want to keep dependable employees.

Ask the employer you are assigned to if they would consider hiring you , when the contract with the agency expires and if they can/will not - ask them if you can expect a pay increase. It doesnt cost them more. If for example you want a 2.00 an hour raise, they simply pay the agency that 2.00 over and above the amount you were contracted for.

We used to use temps frequently.

Many years ago when I was in the job market .. I got a few jobs through temp staffing .. No testing, hardly an interview ..

I highly recommend it .. The employer likes you and will offer the same money, or better - to stay .. then you are also free to 'climb the ladder'..

Employers like the method so they aren't tied down to an employee.

My sis in law was married to a military man..because they moved much she took to utilizing a temp agency...this saved in her having to be committed if he got commissioned to another assignment base unit. They could up and move without the employment hassled...and it didnt mar her record.

THe PROS' of a business using this method for temps was iterated so I shall simply state this...Both sides create a win win.

The downer is that a person also doesn't get to have the long term camaraderie established thru years of servicing or creating company goals....

Experience is jagged and takes a special person to transistion between places... The positive is...if ya don't like the co workers...its just time served and move on...

The ones I have worked for, the actual job said it is temp to hire. But then you find out they don't. Another hollow lie. Maybe it is different in other areas of the US but here they'd rather train new people every week than even think of offering a raise or fulltime employment. But that's just me
