Why not? I'd like to hear more specifics...

Scooters are the least masculine mode of transportation out there. Why not just get a motorcycle??

How about a guy who rides a MT. Bike in his biker shorts and cargos on?...

My bike is cool, man.....29 speed;)

Eric, I'm not sure there's any mode of transportation for you that would help...

I kid, I kid.

Oh man, if one did exist I would have three of them in my yard!

I know! Along with your tractor and other ... weird things.

Does a scooter make sense to you?

Do you live in a built up traffic clogged area?

Do you want to be able to get around quickly and easily?

Do you want a cheap mode of private transport?

Take no notice of 'Ooh you look gay!'. Think about why someone would make a judgement based on what mode of transport you use anyway. Seriously.

Scooters are cool, cheap, easy to maintain, reliable. Best for cities IMO, or holiday type situations.

I have driven scooters, motorbikes, cars, vans, trucks, artics, diggers and bulldozers. They all do different jobs, they are machines, tools, to get a job done with. There is no sexual orientation connotation. Except in the minds of others. Who should grow up.

Just get a new Ninja 250 (08 or later). They look amazing, get great gas mileage (I get 70-80 mpg), have much more power and are more fun than a scooter. Plus you'll actually look good on it.

Scooters scare me too, because I'd feel like I didn't have enough power to get out of the way if something happened. Maybe that's a biased perception, though.

I don't think it's biased, I think it stems from the fact that there are a lot of dinky 50 cc scooters out there, and even 150 cc may not be enough for two passengers. I figure I'd need at least a 250 cc to safely carry myself and a normal size passenger and still be able to accelerate out of a potentially dangerous situation. At that point, unless I'm willing to settle for a cheap Chinese import, something like the Ninja 250 becomes a competitive alternative.

See, to me, that's not really an answer, it's just an assertion. I'm curious about why people perceive them to be that way.

All that said, there are definitely other advantages to the motorcycle... I'd feel more comfortable going out of town for a day on the motorcycle, for sure. Though I'm not sure how I feel about crotch rockets. I'm a very safe driver, and practically every motorcyclist I see driving something like the Ninja seems to have a deathwish. I know I don't have to drive like that, but still. I also had a college girlfriend who took a spill and ended up in the hospital for a bit. No permanent injuries, thankfully, but she hasn't ridden since. (Not that scooters are necessarily safer)

I have a friend with a motorcycle and a friend with a scooter, so I think I'm going to talk to both of them, then take the safety course, do some riding, and eventually make up my mind.

As I mentioned in the original post, this isn't really about practicality... I don't need it for commuting (take the subway for that), but if I had it I would definitely find uses for it. Mainly though, it'd be about FUN! Fuel efficiency isn't a big concern for me, my last vehicle was an SUV that got 17 MPG so I think almost anything is going to be better than that :-)

I've asked women this exact question, because I live in an urban area and a scooter would be very practical. But the overwhelming consensus of the women I talked to was that they assume that men who ride scooters are gay. (And that men who ride motorcycles have very small penises).

How does riding a motorcycle = having a small penis? :o:confused:

It seems kind of odd to me to write off an entire class of vehicle that way. I can understanding wondering about the guy who's driving a pink VW bug, but all scooters = gay? Don't get it.

Thing is, if I'm interested in a woman and she discovers I have a scooter, by that point she's going to know I'm not gay. It's not really going to be a guessing game. As for women on the sidewalk who I don't know, I don't really care what they think.

There are also people who might assume that if you live with a gay man, you must be gay (or they'll at least give you a second look)... where I'm from that's not true. I share a house with a gay man, but I don't get questions about my sexuality. Although the last place I lived, I did hear from my female friends that the gay men were dissappointed to find out I was straight :)

No, it's not rational. Of course not. But we're talking about women, remember?

I don't think they look gay at all. Just stupid. I wouldn't be caught dead riding one.

Secretly, though, I want to take a city tour on one.

Not gay but ghey. :D dweebie and Casper Milquetoastish. I guess if I worked on some sprawling campus and had to keep going from building to building I'd acquiescee to using one of those things if other people used them. But I wouldn't be tossing rose pedals out of a flight bag yelling "fabulous" from it.

:lmao::lmao:

Okay, THAT I would interpret as gay.

In general, though, a guy zipping to work on a scooter is, IMO, thoroughly unremarkable. I live in an urban area and have seen it many times, never particularly thought twice about it other than it seemed practical. My male cousin who lives in a different and also very urban metro area owns a scooter.

I have never personally dated a man with a scooter but I don't remember it ever coming up so I can say I have never turned down a man because of his scooter.

I have turned down men because of their motorcycles, bc I had one boyfriend who tragically died in a motorcycle accident, another guy I was dating and am still friends with who was in a coma for three weeks and then six months of physical rehabilitation after a motorcycle accident, and a close friend of the family whom I had known from his toddlerhood died in a motorcycle accident on the Autobahn, life cut short abruptly at only 24 years old--I watched what his death did to his surviving family, as well. I used to ride around on motorcycles and was learning to drive one myself at one time but now I will never sit on another unwalled vehicle and I will probably go out of my mind with fear if my kids are ever stupid enough to want to drive them in the future.
