U1987
This is going to sound silly, but I want an indie, punk or hipster girlfriend. I'm a pretty clean-cut, conservative (not necessarily politically/culturally, but in style) guy, and for the past few years, those are the kinds of girls I've been dating. The problem is, I've been getting bored of that recently. I'm getting tired of the going-steady/serious-relationship routine with ordinary girls. It's not fun for me anymore and it gets pretty bland pretty fast. To be honest, I just want a wild, alternative "bad-girl" with no inhibitions to experience new things and maybe help bring out my "wild-side" so-to-speak. I've been finding myself attracted to indie, punk and hipster girls recently, but I don't want to radically alter my style and mannerisms just to try to win them over. How can I land one of these girls without having to?
tman666
Never work out or do anything remotely masculine, grow a whispy unkempt beard, wear flannel shirts, and drink PBR. Buy a dilapidated shell of an old European car and make it your "project". Have it sit in a shed where you go and spend countless hours hanging out in introspective examination. Cover the walls with odd knick knacks and posters of only the most obscure indie bands and movies. As you embark upon this quest, I think you'll soon discover that life is not like a Michael Cera movie.
kalikula
Just flirt with them, maybe they wouldn't mind dating someone different from them. My best friend is very "punk" and her bf is definitely more conservative... Frankly a weird relationship, she loves to party and drink and smoke literally all the time, doesn't want a job, doesn't really care about much, while he works at a coffee shop, parties some but not nearly as much, sociology major... But I guess it works for them..
pandagirl
Honestly, just because you are "alternative" doesn't mean you're crazy or wild. What it really means is that these groups have different interests, that can be subversive and not "generic." Uniqueness and being interesting (whatever that means) are probably the most important things you should possess. You have to remember: most punk and indie girls grew up being social misfits -- not the pretty girl in high school. We're not interested in the norm. Dante311
My last three were either indie, punk, hipster, or quasi-goth... I want someone clean cut and with her **** together. just met someone like that. she's into me. and i hope I'm into her... heh... ****.

I thought Seattle Washington was the place to go for the grunge/punk scene. Afterall, that's the birthplace of Nirvana and everybody over there totally digs Chuck Palahniuk. Author U1987
Any advice on what to do or say specifically when I see one of these girls? When I'm on campus today and I see one of the punk or indie girls, what do I do?
kiss_andmakeup
While I don't consider myself to be a member of any particular subculture, I am sometimes involuntarily placed there simply due to tattoos, ever-changing hair colours, and interest in music. I'd say I dress classic with an edge, in fact I avoid dressing "indie" at all costs, but some people don't really seem to know the difference. And, as someone who is occasionally cast into those subcultures, I can tell you that it's rather foolish to assume that someone will behave a certain way just based on their looks. I have a friend who dresses like a punk but has the most traditional, chaste love life of all of my friends. It really means nothing. If you seek a "wild child" type personality, you're going to have to dig a little deeper than just looking for piercings, tattoos, and hair dye. Oh, and FYI, despite my vaguely "alternative" or edgy look, my boyfriend is a completely un-tatooed, un-pierced, khaki-wearing square. :]

Gallaxia
Truthfully? I'm not sure it could work for the simple fact that you used the societal label terms. If you are it, you just live it and gravitate towards it. If you mention you're pretty clean-cut and have more of a conservative image then they're pretty much opposites. Do you understand what it really means to be a "hipster"? It's not about a t-shirt or music for example. Those are derivatIves of. It's not about image (being a punk or indie)- they stand out because it's "against the grain" of the masses. Then there are posers but that's for another thread). It's about living and expressing authentic creativity & individuality as opposed to blindly going along with the masses and corporate bigwigs/bottom line agendas, among other things. If they're a poser they won't know. I detailed some things because you'd have to ask yourself- Do those ideas resonate with you? the TRUE you? Enough for a lifestyle change ? You mentioned that you were bored. Just keep in mind that the changes would have to come from within you, not from someone else. Consider carefully before you make any changes. Otherwise you'd be bull$hi##ing yourself and the girl's time. It's awesome you recognized you need a change and want to do something. We do more harm to ourselves when we choose to ignore those "itches", just consider carefully and that it comes from within. Sorry if the post come off as a wet blanket-ish but just want to make sure you get another perspective of what you're considering. We never get back time...

Uh, dig deeper as in, if you want a girl with a wild personality, you're going to have to actually get to know some girls and figure out if they have the personality you're looking for. And acknowledge that the one you find might not have the most tattoos or piercings. To me, there is something very "high school" about only wanting to date a member of a specific "group." runner
also i think it's gravely incorrect to use "indie" and "punk" in the same sentence with "hipster" indie types are the way they are because they hold fairly radical opinions and see/think of the world differently. and yes, many of them don't necessarily have tattoos or dress a certain way (eg, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Naomi Klein, etc.). no offence, but if it's an image thing, i'm afraid the OP is just gonna have to bite the bullet and go shop at a Hot Topic with the other "alternative" suburban "hipsters"
Green
I did a search for top 10 hipster schools and found this accurate article http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/09/top-10-hipster-schools_n_531852.html If you live within an hour of any of these schools these would be good places to search for your hipster GF. The trick to getting hipster girls is acting like a hipster. Good luck.
Cee
I'm an indie/hipster chick, but I have no tats, piercings, and I dress conservatively. What defines me as indie is that I live simply, embrace DIY art and music culture, am politically left, and don't equate money with worth. Plus, I got a kickass used bike and I don't own a car. To win a woman like me, you have to find me. If I don't see you at a dive bar, art show or at a hipster rave, I'm never going to meet you. Put your wallet away and start enjoying your city/town by attending free or low cost events. Places with open bars are popular with us hipsters as are concerts put on in people's garages. P.S. There is no such thing as a wild woman. Every woman has the potential to be wild. Good chemistry and energy with you will bring it out in her.

Secondly they would not dress conservativly and he atleast DOESN'T want a girl who dress's conservativly. He wants some pink streaks of hair and that urban outfitters look. Finaly P.S. There is such a thing as a wild woman and every man knows it. I never call myself a hipster, but I wanted to use the label for the sake of the post. In real life, people call me a hero or a cutie. Or simply by my first name. When I say, I dress conservatively, I meant that I don't buy a $50 tee at Urban Outfitters. Instead I buy a $2 tank I get at a thrift store. I'm not trying to "look" a certain part here, I'm just trying to not be naked in public. But yeah, pink hair, horn rimmed glasses (I have those), and certain clothes can gives clues about a person's "alternative-ness." P.S. Yes, I agree that there is such a thing as a wild woman- it's in most every woman. Maybe not jumping into fountains wild ala Zelda Fitzgerald. I'm a wild woman, but if I'm bored, I'm not playing. It's like the frog in the cartoon- he only sings and dances in front of the right person. Otherwise, he's a boring toad.
gypsy_nicky
I really don't think 'punk' or 'indie' subcultures exist nowadays. It's more of hipsters taking on each subculture. the only subcultures I know that seem to still exist in completeness are goths, skinheads and the hip hop scene. the first thing hipsters will tell you is they're not hipsters, so don't mention their hipsters. Try getting into really obscure things and faking being working class. I have to say that most hipster chicks are hot.

Yes to be with a hipster you probably have to be middle class (100k a year family atleast) and act as though you are border line poor while still going out and doing things and spending plenty of money

That was gross. I weep for the OP's immortal soul. Anyway, "hipster" chicks are not wild or crazy in any way. They are repressed, calculated, and pretentious as piss. Chicks who are into the punk scene, maybe. A person who truly believes in the indie philosophy would necessarily never stick a label on herself and would not go out of her way to conform even to an indie norm. I posit that she would be utterly incompatible with you. You seem like a tool. Go appreciate something that doesn't come from an assembly line. Go read something that makes you think. Go create something unprecedented. Then maybe you'd attract the sort of women who would do the same.
