My best buddy was brought up Catholic and suddenly he decided he didn't like the dogma, the theology, etc etc... so I gave him a book written by a modern male witch, and he wanted to go to an actual witch gathering.

Well, that was a "where-has-this-been-all-my-life" experience for him... last I saw him, two days ago, he was behaving pretty much like a North Korean who has just defected to Sweden.

Cool story bro.

He'll probably grow out of it; a lot of young people go through phases of believing in nonsense like that, and eventually they come to their senses.

Are you talking about the catholicism or the witchcraft?

I doubt that will happen. My buddy is 43 and has been fed up with the strict religious tradition in which he was raised (BTW this is where a lot of Unitarians come from as well). Plus, he likes the fact that so many people in his new-found neo-pagan community are as environmentally conscious as he is. There are a couple of people in our local coven who are in their 70s, and they were practicing when witchcraft was still in the closet.

I do worry about my aunt tho... she never questioned her strict religious background, and was very saddened to hear about my buddy. She fears he'll end up in a very hot place which is definitely not Phoenix. I joked with her and said "well, if we can't get him into Heaven, we'll have to be happy with his decision to get into Elphame instead." My aunt's idea of Heaven sounds very much like Stalin's Russia.

BTW I never could bring myself to believe in the airy-fairy supernatural side of any system of beliefs (I'm living proof that too much science more or less demolishes your sense of magic), but my buddy is jumping in with both feet.
