urbanite Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 I will be in Asia in a few days on a business trip and was wondering whether it would be weird to go clubbing alone assuming none of my international colleagues would be the type and younger (mid 20s). Specifically Beijing, China? Has anyone gone clubbing/bar hopping alone in a foreign country due to work? How has it turned out or what are some alternatives? Much appreciated, thanks for responses.. I am a male living on the east coast and go clubbing with friends here on a regular basis, but never alone. What do local women in other countries think of Americans? Not necessarily looking to hook up, but just have a good time once done with work and enjoying the company of a beautiful stranger would be nice.
Knittress Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 I've done it. Not in Beijing, mind you. You're not going all that way just to see the inside of a hotel room now, are you? Go out, see the sights!
snowbell Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 (edited) When I was studying abroad, I went to some bars in Japan solo. It might be different as a Caucasian female in an urban Japanese setting seeing how all the salarymen in their mid-30s want to buy you drinks to "practice English" with the cute foreign student, but I would see no issue with a guy doing it. Men with less-than-noble intentions aside, I met some hysterical locals that way. This woman with excellent English skills was really drunk and kept talking about how boring it is where she lives and she wants to travel abroad - too bad it's pretty much the same scene in the US, haha. And I got into conversations with people about their favorite bands - talking to people from other cultures in general about music is awesome! Great way to learn about new bands and the cultural reach of US artists. As long as you're having fun, I say go for it, dude. Edited August 19, 2010 by snowbell
Author urbanite Posted August 19, 2010 Author Posted August 19, 2010 I'm worried about the language barrier and how to work around it. For those that have been in a similar predicament, have you tried possibly using the internet for ways to network or connect with locals over there first? Maybe the online dating sites?
Knittress Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 Predicament? Dude, relax. Just leave the house, smile at people, don't take yourself too seriously, nod your head to the music, have a drink, be encouraging to the people who are brave enough to practice their English on you, etc etc.
meerkat stew Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 Wouldn't recommend it, even in the U.S. in a strange town or city. You will stick out, be talked about, and if there is a bad element present, you will draw its attention. Sticking to high profile nicer places in populous areas as opposed to quiet empty streets might make a good compromise.

I typically don't when I travel abroad ( I travel alot)... but I don't see why not, DEPENDING where... BUT, after what happened to my collegues in brazil.. I am not going to be going to no club alone in a foreign country...it was five of them.. they were in a local bar / club... at the end of the night the club got empty, and they locked the doors before they could get out.. they demanded $$ b4 they let them out... they got ROBBED by the workers of all their cash.. so f.uck foreign bars/ clubs alone, f/kn foreigners... screw um..
good_vibes Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Go to http://www.couchsurfing.com. You will find people to go out with. I dunno if I would go by myself.
skydiveaddict Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I did it one time while on leave in Okinawa. the first part of the night I was self conscious but eventually ran into a bunch of marines who I hung with the rest of the night. But I agree bar hopping by yourself is a drag
Jilly Bean Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 No, its not, but when you're in a foreign country and you dont speak the native language, you want to make sure youre not putting yourself in danger. Ive been to Beijing. Not exactly the most accommodating to "round eye", so if you go out alone, ask the concierge at your hotel for safe recommendations. A good hotel will advise you properly, as they wouldnt want the bad PR from you ending up in a bad situation. Just understand that being American + alcohol + communist country isn't always a recipe for fun. Be safe.
jadedone Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 It's not unusual, at least go to a club that has other foreigners like you.

In Hong Kong, metro Korea or metro Japan, not weird at all. No idea about Beijing. I was there once, but we didn't go to a single bar or club. It didn't seem like it had a huge club scene, from what we saw, but we were only there 3 days. And it was freezing. From what I've heard, I agree with those who say Beijing is a place you want to be a bit careful.
