We've gone on various short trips with just each other, just my stepdaughter, or just myself and our son, and one trip all together but with other family along to babysit while my husband and I were focused on romance.

I'm packing tonight and we're leaving in the morning for our first classic family vacation: kids bickering in the backseat, dad threatening to turn the car around, everybody staying in the same hotel room/tent, lots of educational opportunities planned. I feel like this is a weirdly defining 'mom' moment, being on the parent side of this type of vacation.

Wish me luck.

be sure to take along a deck of cards, pick-up sticks or a board game or two. It might drive the kids nuts, but man! What a way to build up some good memories while bonding with each other.

confiscate their electronics, too, maybe save them til bedtime, like the iPods? That way they're forced to interact with the family.

hope y'all have fun on the trip – any place particular? I have my sights set on one of the barrier islands of S. Georgia, it looks pretty cool, but we'll see how that works out!

So far so good . Kids are almost-eleven and almost-two, not much in the way of personal electronics yet, still like most of our music. Hey, we've got good taste in music. There have been a few moments where our patience has been leaned on pretty hard, but nobody's snapped and gone berserk (yet). We're having a nice beachy holiday, driving along the coast, swimming and boating, eating a lot of seafood, stopping at some well-known anthropological museums and aquariums. Dragging the kids to look at historic architecture . Soon to do a spot of camping in the woods for the hiking portion of our trip.

Xanax might be a good idea before we get stuck in a tent on the rocky ground with the baby kicking us all night.

A CD got jammed the wrong way into the CD player by little hands covered in syrup so now we're stuck with just the radio, that could be a problem.

Also wishing it was safe and acceptable to let them play in the hotel parking lot for an hour while we get some 'married grownup time' :lmao:. Family vacations are hell on your sex life.

A beach holiday sounds aces. Hope the syrup doesn't fry your car stereo.
