A lot of people advise installing a keylogger on a PC when the red flags are already flying high, to get absolute proof. But every time I've tried to do this (all 2 of them), I've had problems.

First problem being, finding a good (ie. free) one. I don't want to pay money for it, especially as I don't know how good/effective it's going to be. I don't want a demo or time-limited evaluation version. I don't need a full-featured monitoring package that will record every single mouse movement and other action performed on the computer... I just want to capture keystrokes to get passwords, msn chats, etc. And of course, I don't want to download any trojan/spyware/viruses that will reveal the keystrokes to anyone except me!

Second problem being that Windows and AV programs really don't like a keylogger being installed. Even if I manage to download it without it being quarantined, the firewall always seems to find, block and remove it.

So, to those who recommend a keylogger... do you have any more information on a good one to use, and how to get it up and running and undetected?

You don't need a keylogger. You don't need absolute proof. The trust is already gone, and without trust there is no relationship. Either your lover is cheating, or you're a paranoid psychotic. In either case, the relationship is over. Just end it and forget the snooping crap.

Don't pay attention to those who try to tell you that you don't need proof..

If you're married...hard, concrete evidence may be to your benefit if you end up divorcing.

If you have reasonable cause to be suspicious, and you've already tried communicating, to no avail (face it, cheaters lie, and have no problem putting their loved ones through emotional hell so they can eat cake) yes, then it's time to investigate. If anything, for your own peace of mind. If you've been gaslighted, repeatedly, you deserve to know the truth.

Setting aside the question of whether it is a good idea to use one, let me give you some technical advice. If you want a decent, working keylogger, you will have to pay. There is no way around this. Even if you do managed to find a free one that works, I can practically guarantee you it will come with a virus. There is a saying in engineering: "fast, cheap, reliable... pick two of the three." This applies here as well.

Your best bet is a hardware keylogger. These sit physically between the keyboard and the computer, are undetectable by software or antivirus programs, and work independent of the operating system being used. Here's one example: http://www.keelog.com/usb_hardware_keylogger.html

However, this poses a problem if you are dealing with a laptop. At that point, you are probably going to have to resort to a well known and probably expensive program, and maybe create some antivirus program exceptions.

Also, if the target is at all technically inclined or "good with computers", don't do it, as they will very easily find out.

Finally, for getting passwords, if you have access to the computer and it is a Mac, use "Keychain Access" to discover cached passwords. Also if passwords are saved using Firefox, you can reveal those as well. You can probably do this in Internet Explorer or other browsers as well, Google is your friend.

Something to consider is the legality of putting a keylogger on the computer

If you don't own it you cannot do it and if an expectation of privacy has been established then you cannot legally do it either..

Each state and country has it's own laws regarding interfering in someone's privacy.

I found this on a website where a lawyer answered the question

It is considered wiretapping in this guys state.

http://www.justanswer.com/questions/2723u-can-placing-a-keylogger-on-your-wifes-laptop-be-considered

Cookie.. Isn't your divorce already filed ?

Why not ask your attorney about the legal issue ?

also.. if it is already filed then if the computer is her laptop then the expectation of privacy is already set, you cannot legally just snoop through someone's emails etc if you have already filed a legal action against them and they have retained counsel or you may find yourself on the wrong side of the law.

Don't you also already have enough proof ?

By the way.. as an employer I have used on one occasion a commercial one available and those automatically add the exceptions to the virus software for you and run in stealth mode

Yes... well not filed yet (have to wait 12 months from the wedding date) but I have my proof and it is decided. I was inquiring because it is something I tried unsuccessfully to do, I had to read her text messages instead to get my proof. Being a bit of a geek, that frustrated me a little. The idea seems to be thrown around in quite a few threads... whenever there's mention of someone using a computer for unscrupulous business, someone suggests a keylogger. It occurred to me what even though I am very tech savvy, I'd never actually managed to get one up and running, so I wondered how it could be so liberally suggested to random posters whose overall tech knowledge is likely to be quite lower than mine.

The one I used for work when we had an employee here allegedly looking at child porn was Spector Pro from Spectorsoft..

I paid about 100 bucks for it and it worked great..

Google "allinone keylogger"...free 0ne week trial, easy to install and be sure to erase the visit to their site from your history...that's what foiled me.

Sure and I have some prime real estate to sell ya if you don't mind a few thousand gators as nabors.. lol

Lets face it cookie your not looking to do this so you can fulfill a geekley need you doing it to catch her out. Now I don't necessarily argue that motivation I think its healthy to find evidence as it makes it easier to get closure/move on.

But lets call a spade a spade here now the next thing I'm thinking is like Art said ultimately you get what you pay for in this life 9 times out of ten. Example all the "free" anti virus crap I've ever used has done nothing but let my pc crash time and again.

Yet soon as I coughed up 35 bucks and got a proper one I've never had any issues to date go look for a moderately priced one to catch her out with. Eh consider it the cost of piece of mind/closure and who knows maybe it will help you rake some extra money out of the lieing harpie come court day! ;):D

Err, no, sorry. I've already caught her out and got all the proof I need. She's moved out now so I wouldn't be able to install a keylogger anyway, even if I wanted to. My divorce will be filed on the 1st anniversary of our wedding, no matter what else happens.

I'm a software developer and created one for my own personal use and for a friend who's husband is cheating. It's working great (and unfortunetly) I guess you can say is giving her proof of his cheating ways.

It has a 7 day trial, I only have it as $9.95 for this reason.. I believe the other systems out there are way too high in price for something like this. It will log keystrokes, screenshots and email them to you. Please read the directions on it once you install it. Any questions PM me about it or email me which is on the program.

WatchDOG Keylogger

And mine bypasses ALL antivirus systems.

Proof is in the eye of the beholder. My exMMs wife read every email in his account after she hacked in. It was hundreds over about a 10 month period and she still wanted to believe what she wanted to believe.

Me, it took the look in the eye of my exH to tell me what I needed to know.

Hi cookie!!

I know I am out of the main thread but I just wanted to say I am terribly sorry and that I know you won't be able to realize it now but as sad as it is that you intend to divorce on your first wedding anniversary it would be worst to live for years and years like that.

Please take good care of yourself and keep posting.
