I cant sleep

The worst part is that I have night terrors before I actually wake up and then I wake up confused and not sure if he still lives with me or not. He doesn't, once I realize it, I get depressed. Feels like PTSD.

I hadn't thought of it like that before. I have to assume that for some people breakups are traumatic enough to trigger PTSD? I wonder how this would be treated differently than "normal" depression and anxiety?

I feel for you skydiveaddict, it's been 2 months today since my ex broke my heart and I have not had a good nights sleep since. I either can't fall asleep in the first place, but more often than not, I can fall asleep but end up awake for 3 hours or so in the middle of the night. :(

I've printed out one of my favorite guides/threads for coping, that I found most helpful to me and actually have started to read that when I wake up to ease my mind and help me get back to sleep...it seems to be helping.

My therapist diagnosed me with PTSD due to abandonment issues in my past. However a psychiatrist at the Veteran's Affairs Hospital says it's not PTSD unless you fear for your life. I think they just want to be sure not to diagnose people with PTSD because they can file for a disability claim.

My therapist addressed my other issues rather than the PTSD.

My damn army doc cut me off

Seriously, Sky? The VA won't give you a script?

See a private doc, then. They are VERY inexpensive pills to buy.

I might try that, but it's against the rules 'cause we're getting deployed again soon. I could get in trouble

Great song choices, SD. Especially the Shinedown song...love that one... :(

Yeah, thanks. I'm kinda backsliding in the broken up girlfriend department, so late at night these kinds of songs come to me. I know, I'm pathetic

Hahah, I was doing alright...but it's still a problem when at the end of the day, no one else but her is on your mind, even with everything else that's going on... :(

Jillybean, when you are on active duty, they dont send you to the VA. You go to the base medical clinic. Those docs are a lot more stingy about handing out meds.

I haven't had a good nights sleep in 3 weeks aside from last Saturday when I passed out drunk, even then I only got 5 hours.

I cant sleep and I know why

Cheesy rock videos haunt me too but it is not what keeps me up at night, its my own darn over thinking that does it to me ;)

sky, you been here for while, you may want to pick up the book Journey for Abandonment to Healing. If I remember your doing all the right things; NC exercise, activities, eating well, hanging with mates, and of course skydiving. As great your your EX may have been, you may not be moving on for other reasons, the book my help you find them.

I've been laying here awake for over 45 minutes. I should just get up and do something productivce. JB I'm considering taking Ambien but I've heard stories about sleepwalking. Since it is just the kids and me now I'm a bit scared to take them. 4 hours of sleep a night is killing me.

wrencn have you tried writing with pen and paper down your thoughts before going to sleep. I suggest just writing fast and hard, with no care for grammer or spelling, do not edit yourself, it does not even matter if you can read it, just write until you can not write anymore. Try it a few nights, it may help.

(I should now go and take my own advice )

Chronic problem for the sensitive and caring (i.e. the people that live here). I had sleep problems since the kids were born, got really bad around divorce time so I took Ambien CR for over a year. Slept but still didn't feel rested, and then felt sluggish all day. I got off it, but now I am back to only getting a few hours a night. Sucks and doesn't help your mental state or ability to heal at all....

Funny- I was thinking I need to start journaling and doing yoga before bed. I will give it a try tonight. I'm also going to take melatonin and valerian root. I need to sleep!

you may what to do the yoga earlier, like any exercise it will likely wake you up if done to close to bed time.

In the past I've had success with doing it right before bed, it really calmed me down and put me to bed. I can fall asleep I just cant stay asleep. Bleh.

Stolen from my new bff Bboy

5. I wake up in the middle of the night!

Another classic. Problem is of course to fall asleep again. What happened is that you’re probably not falling into deep sleep. A trick here is to rearrange something. Get up take your pillow and blanket and go sleep on the couch! Another one is to go up, shave, brush your teeth, perhaps even make your breakfast sandwiches ready for tomorrow and then go back to bed. Third one that I’ve heard is actually quite interesting. Change the temperature you’re sleeping in. I have a friend who goes up and puts on his morning robe and goes back to bed. Others go completely naked instead.

Just make that change!

Thanks. I really need to get a mask and ear plugs- I think that would help too.
