Angel1111 Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 I thought this might interest some of you. I've been reading a bio on Georgia O'Keeffe and found it a little amusing. When she met Stieglitz, he had been married for over 20 yrs. He actually persued O'Keeffe quite heavily - mostly through letters. Down on her luck when she moved to NY, O'Keeffe ended up getting romantically involved with Stieglitz. They had an affair until his wife caught them. He divorced his wife - not because he really wanted to but felt he had little choice at that point. There was immense drama with his ex-wife and daughter over the years. Also, he cheated on O'Keeffe at least twice, the last affair lasting many years, and right under Georgia's nose. His affair partner was married but when she became pregnant, Stieglitz openly wondered if the child was his and even said that he had symptoms like being pregnant (yes, this guy was an idiot). This must've been a real slap to O'Keeffe because she wanted children and talked to Stieglitz about it several times (I didn't even know they had birth control then but they did - it was a new thing). He refused to agree to having a child because he was too old (he was about 24 yrs older than her) and he had so many problems with his own daughter that he didn't want to go through it again. O'Keeffe eventually had a nervous breakdown and I think that's when she moved to New Mexico permanently (I'm not at that point in the book yet) - although she and Stieglitz stayed married. I do know that when Stieglitz died, O'Keeffe told the OW to pack her bags and never show her face again. Funny that Georgia was so judgemental of the OW when she herself was one. It just made me think about how we think things are so unique but really it seems there's really nothing new under the sun.
wheelwright Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 yeah, LS made me realise that all the highly unique feelings I had in my A were far from it. What was unprecidented in my own life, was the level of intimacy and passion. And the pain. Goodness knows what O'Keefe went through. There is nothing worse than the pain of wanting a child and not achieving that. As happen. Rs happen. Love happens with no pain, or with pain. Did someone say sh** happens?
joey66 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Every affair is unique and every affair is exactly the same.

It just made me think about how we think things are so unique but really it seems there's really nothing new under the sun. I think it speaks to the way we all feel. When we fall in love, whether we be OW, MP, or BS, we expect the SAME things; honesty, fidelity and consideration from the object of our love. When we do not receive it, the pain is intense NO MATTER WHERE ARE THE TRIANGLE YOU LIE. As for her lack of forgiveness....well, they say you do not truly know that pain until you experience it, yes? So now she finally connects with the love of her life and....he cheats on her too! No different than any OW here who finally lands the love of her life and then finally finds herself in the position of the BS. We all belive our love is unique; different; sublime and true. It hurts to find out differently....
