After 7 years in the burbs I'm moving back into Manhattan.

I'm kind of hoping it will kick start my social and dating life a bit, I've been just working constantly and exercising the past several months with very little interest in dating or hanging out much. It's a drag when you hang out in the city, and the perception is that you live in the boondocks (even though it's not really very far at all). So that part is exciting.

I got a nice place right in midtown - I have mostly lived in average places (and worse!) or had too many roommates or whatever. I donated my old van to charity and am returning the lease of my other car in a couple of weeks. So the living situation is a big change. I'm really looking forward to the new place, and am totally psyched about that part too.

I got into in a Master's program (part time), but deferred until January since I picked up a lot of work over the summer (I do contracting/freelance). I don't even know if I will follow up on the school thing. I'd like to for interest but it's hard to pay for school when I could be getting paid 10x as much to do work similar to the classes I'd be taking. I guess I'll see about that, I applied just for personal interest as I don't really want any more resume stuffers.

Anyway I guess I'd like to know anyone else's experiences recently with moving and changing their situation pretty drastically. Was it what you hoped for? Not a big deal after all? Happy you did it? Did it work out as you expected or was it a case of the best laid plans of mice and men?

Living in NYC was some of the loneliest times of my life. I found it VERY hard to meet people outside of my work. Which, in fairness, I worked constantly and was super stressed doing so, but even with an afternoon off, it's not like I met people just walking around the city. Except for creepers. lol

I think you're definitely better off living in Manhattan than a borough. :) But, know that it will still require an effort to meet people. Just continue doing the things you like - working out, going out to eat, hitting a museum, etc.

The change of venue can be great for your attitude and opportunities, and I think it will be, but don't rest on that alone. Still continue to network, join activity clubs, enter athletic races, etc.

Enjoy NY! :)

Ew, just a recent visit to NY made me wonder how anyone likes living there.

I need something more relaxing and a bit more rural.
