And which ones are the most effective?

Wouldn't a good (if not best approach) be to ask what the patient wants, and simply give it to him/her?

The only criteria would be:

- Would getting what s/he wants be beneficial for his/her long term emotional wellbeing?

- Would getting what s/he wants be feasible or practicable?

- Would getting what s/he wants lead to harming other, or the patient themselves?

- Would getting what s/he wants be consistent with the patient's own personality/mindset?

Psychiatry has changed from the old "couch" routine. It is now almost strictly psycho-pharmacology, i.e. the prescription of medication to treat physiological causes of such things as emotional instability, anxiety, depression. A psychiatrist is an MD--a medical doctor concerned with one's physiological links to emotional or mental maladies. Therefore it has become pretty much one approach although he or she may work with the patient to find the most effective medication sometimes requiring many adjustments to dosages, combinations of meds or change of the meds themselves. All other psychological treatment comes under the heading of psychology or psychotherapy which are not performed by MDs but PhDs. They prescribe no medications and have a wide range of individual techniques to council people who have symptoms of mental or emotional unwellness.

These are the things your family doc would figure out when making a referral on your behalf.

Step One: Diagnosis

Step Two- Treatment Plan

Step Three- Monitoring (if medications are necessary)

Step 4- Review Treatment for effectiveness after 3-6 months

Step 5- Continue with current treatment or re-adjust contingent on the patients symptoms or progress.

When assessing a patient- its more about the "condition" and less about the subject (person)...SO while a patient has rights under medical care on how or if they consent, a psychiatric treatment plan may be court ordered....Trust me some folks sincerely need someone looking out for their best interest especially when they may have severe psychiatric conditions....

Both Psychiatry and Psychology can be Doctorates in their fields.

I don't know the answer to your question. But most psychiatrists these days just manage medication, from my limited experience. I am currently seeing one for ptsd from the the war. He just gives me meds, which are really helping me out

Does this approach differ or is it universal?

I don't think anybody seriously disputes this.

Most people don't need a psychiatrist, who is a medical doctor and generally treats brain disorders which affect mental function.

Most people just cannot cope with life due to various problems and how they feel about those problems, people and themselves. Try the Lefkoe Method and save yourself time and money! :p
