JennaLee Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Can someone please explain the whole divorce process? I need to get one, but I am broke basically and cannot afford it. Someone told me divorces are extremely expensive. =( My husband is willing to just do it easily, and just sign. We will not be sharing anything, whats mine is mine, and what he left with is his. I do not want alimony, just him out of my life.
2sure Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Depending on what US state you live in you DO have affordable options. Check on line for organizations such as Neighborhood Legal Services, Volunteer Lawyers Association, and even a kit to file your own uncontested divorce. The real expense incurred in divorce is basically sorting out child custody and monetary asserts/ liabilities. Thats what the lawyers are for. Your state filing fees are something everyone has to pay for and your state may or may not require an attorney to file them.
imagine Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 An American friend of mine wrote out a contract. Her ex husband signed it. She found a lawyer that would take the contract to a judge at the amount that SHE specified. I can't remember the exact amount (maybe $100) By the by, she got alimony.

Also, if he makes more money than you get the alimony. That's how one-sided settlements are created - someone just wants out.
