I watched the new A&E series, Obsessed last night. It's a documentary about different people struggling with extreme Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, and Hoarding. Watching the anxiety on their face when they have to do an exercise that brings them out of their comfort zone/obsession.. I know that feeling all too well. I feel like I can't breathe when I can't clean my house, and organize.

My sister and her baby stayed three days with me, and I felt like I was drowning. Milk spilling everywhere, sticky food all over the kitchen table & chairs, cigarrette smell in my daughter's room! Even though my sis smoked outside, her stuff smelled like an ashtray.

Anywho..... back to topic.. :o It's a good watch. OCD is no fun!

Another new series just launched is the OCD Project. Very informative and eye-opening, not to mention hosted by one of the best cognitive behavioral therapists I’ve seen on television to date. :bunny:

Watching Hoarders is very difficult. It's so foreign to me to see how people can live in such an environment, and then see their attachment to garbage before it's thrown out. It's VERY interesting pathology, however.

Lol.. yeah! It's sad when you see a true hoarder who suffers from collecting things, but it's a different story when you see lazy slobs who refuse to clean their house! The people that live in trash, urine, and feces.. completely disturbing! I think they're just too lazy to clean their house, they are literally pigs.

Oh man... So true! I saw several episodes (the wife DVRs it) where one person is actually a hoarder with boxes and "things" all over the house and the other example is some fat slob with TRASH and dog turds, bugs, maggots and filth all over their house! One lady was crappin' in adult diapers and throwing them in her bathroom! She was stuck in a chair in her kitchen surrounded by waste and trash! That's NOT hoarding... That's just nasty laziness! She was old and needed help, but come ON!

Yep!

I saw an episode where a woman was crying and getting freaked out because they were throwing out her kitchen GARBAGE, and she was having second thoughts, and demanded to go through all of it before it was thrown out.

Most of these hoarders seem to live with families, though. And that's really disturbing. When you see these little kids forced to live in this filth.

Enabler? Meet co-dependent. ;)

But seriously, I find the pathology to be fascinating. How someone gets to this point, what need it fills in their life...interesting stuff, though definitely upsetting to watch.

I cant watch much TV but I would love to spend a day watching shows like that. They fascinate me. I am one of those people who tosses out more things than I should only to regret it later. I hate "stuff". If my closets are full, it literally makes me anxious if I leave them too long. I'm not a clean freak, I just am opposed to "stuff". Strongly. When I watched hoarders I made my daughter go through her room and toss anything she hadnt worn in the last 6 months. She is still pissed.

I havent seen the OCD one yet, maybe I better not. I wont let anyone wash their hands.

What I’ve come away with while watching some of the exposures Dr. Tolin subjects his clients to is: “Man, if only these people could see they were far braver than they give themselves credit for!”

Some of the fears they are asked to face would make anyone squeamish… like putting your hands in a dirty gutter and than rubbing it on your face. Even without the added challenge of coping with OCD, there are things they have willing done to conquer their illness (like eating toilet scones  ) that certainly would have sent ME running for exit screaming!

I haven't seen this, but I saw a preview last week, and it kind of freaked me out because I totally identified with the counting thing. I have silently counted things in patterns of three for as long as I can remember.

I have been called out twice in the past few months for my "slight OCD tendencies". For me, it comes out mostly in trying to keep my house scrupulously clean. When I clean, I spend 1-2 hours on each room, and I clean it from top to bottom. I definitely don't have the hoarding tendency -- I prefer a minimalist environment and cannot stand clutter.

I've been doing an exercise lately: letting little messes and piles of clutter lie for a few days. I'm OK with it. But I do always feel better once I clean it up.
