Why do girls tan? Is it for dating?

I've always wondered about this tan obsession, it seems like 'white' isn't in. And brown is where it's at.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about that, my skin has been sun-kissed from day one. I wouldn't trade the glow I get in the sun for anything.

I like the way I look with a slight tan. I'm eastern European and really fair skinned so I have used tanning beds in the past to get some color. I've done the spray tan recently because I decided to give up tanning beds but it's just not the same. I think I will go back to using tanning beds occasionally. I'm not baking myself in to a crisp, and I think that moderate use of the high pressure beds I use is fine.

Girls tan because it is the quickest way to look beautiful.

Just like only really stunning girls can pull off dark hair but *most* women will turn heads as blondes, only really stunning girls can pull off pale skin, and everyone else will be more attractive with some colour.

Tanning is the beauty industries new craze...just like pale skin used to be all the rage. Girls are brought up being told that to be tanned is to be beautiful, sexy, exotic.

Also, I would add the pressure cliche, which I think applies to most young girls.

Women are basically creations and characatures.

REAL women are hairy, naturally many would be pretty fat, most skinny girls would be small-breasted or flat chested, head hair wouldn't be as thick etc etc.

I would argue that girls and women have become constructs now, so that make-up, hair extensions, fake tan, plastic surgery etc have become so engrained within both the female and male mind that a real women, that is, a woman with a single flaw is 'ugly.' You see it in magazines all the time where cellulite or a tiny bit of underarm hair is circled and enlarged and then ridiculed.

Women aren't really allowed to be real women...both by other women and by men.

I remember as a child/young teenager clinging desperately to things I felt pressure to change.

At 12 there was pressure to shave my legs, which weren't even all that hairy at all. I held off for a long time but you do eventually feel 'ugly' or 'unfeminine' even though women naturally ARE hairy.

Anything ugly or masculine is not assocatiated with women yet many women DO naturally have these things. Therefore to become 'female' you have yo take away/change many things about yourself and many girls/women do, unless they are either extremely self-secure, easy going or lucky enough to be loved by an amazing guy that doesn't make them feel the need to buy into that.

Many men also are conditioned to feel the perfect woman is essentially a fake woman, and so it becomes a vicious circle where to be attractive to men and accepted by women, girls MUST change to become that.

Its the same for men but in different ways.

We are all brainwashed to be pretty much all the same in endless ways from birth.

We all want to maximise our sexual attractiveness - that is ultimately why we are here, so if we feel 99% of people think tans are more attractive, most people will do it for a combination of reasons.

1) To feel more attractive.

2) To feel men find you more attractive.

3) To feel you stand a good chance against other women.

I bet many men that don't 'get' why women would fake tan, would still expect a woman to shave, wear make-up on a night out etc.

This cracks me up! Really! Yes, tanning in excess or anything in excess would be harmful. Though UV rays and Vitamin D are not only good for your skin they also can be uppers. Which could explain why some woman go often..they are addictive to some degree! Moderation with tanning or anything in life is key! :)

Food for thought too....Ever heard that the suicide rate is really high in Seattle? Wonder why? Of the 356 days in the year 140 days it rains and add another 40% of cloudy days without the sun= the highest suicide capital in the US. Sun gives us the uppers = Vit. D and UV Rays! :)

Lol. To go along with that, dentistry carries the highest suicide rate profession. Males are most likely to commit suicides. Mondays carry the highest suicide rates.

So what does that mean if you're a male dentist practicing in washington on a monday? BAM! lol.

Life is cruel.

I'm delighted to be white, pale and I wish not to ruin my beautiful skin, but in the case of Kurt Cobain he killed himself because he was married to Courtney Love, I'd probably commit suicide if I was with a woman like her.
