Why do girls tan? Is it for dating?

I have no remorse/guilt for women that tan that have problems later down in life. Tanning is worse than cigs. Why would a girl tan to look good for 3-4 years only to have cancer and skin problems and look like **** later down in life.

Do they do this for dating? What goes through their heads when they tan?

I'm lucky I don't have this problem, haha. I think most girls do do it though because they think it makes them look more beautiful and hence will lead to more dating possibilities.

One of my managers who is an older woman stated that she use to tan a lot in her younger days. and she did it because she liked the broze color. but boy oh boy does she look bronze down. her entire body is covered in brown spots. Im not sure if she has skin cancer or what it is, but it looks bad!

Tanning is not worse than cigarettes. Ain't nothing worse than cigarettes. Yes, a woman with a nice tan in the summertime is attractive.

Leather looking skin is the worse. I don't know what goes through their minds either. Everyone knows it isn't natural but worse is that spray on stuff that looks so fake.

There's this one customer that comes into my job on a weekly basis and tanning has done some horrendous damage to her skin. She now kinda looks like a meth addict. Anyway, I think there's nothing wrong with tanning as long as it's done in moderation.

I have no idea how anyone could lie in a human microwave regularly and not realize they're putting their health at risk.

My GF used to go quite a bit and now only does it once and a while to get a little bit of color and also enjoys how relaxing it is.

I never understood it until I tried it. Honestly it is very relaxing. It also depends on what type of bulbs the place uses as this makes a difference.

As far as the OP's question, yes, I would say women do it to gain color and look healthier....look at professional wrestlers--it's a "must have" for them to be in great shape and have a nice tan. Same goes for top models, etc....society associates color with looking healthier....which honestly I wouldn't disagree cause pale and pasty ain't that hot IMO

As the girls here say (whether it actually applies or not) 'tan fat' looks better than 'white fat'. For girls here it seems to be something to do that makes you look thinner.

A slight tan is fine, but anyone who goes to tanning salons compulsively has something wrong with them. They end up looking awful and downright disgusting

if that were true then black women would all look thin.

i think women tan to look better than other women. its some sort of competition, just like having the best clothes or best looking bf

I like the "healthy glow" look in summer, but I am too worried about premature aging to bake myself in the sun. After 30, wrinkles start making themselves known and too much tanning in your 20s = wrinkles!

I use makeup and bronzers/ tinted moisturisers IN MODERATION, mainly in the summer.

There is nothing worse than looking like you took a shower in orange pulp.

Ha!

I don't like sunbeds, i find them claustrophobic.

Actually I believe the result of the "tanning craze" is directly related to the media and it's glorification of certain aspects of "beauty". Most models these days are recruited from south american countries. There was an article in the NYtimes where they stated they did studies about which settlers from which countries settled there, and then used some algorithims to calculate what body features were most likely to show up given the current population spread.

But I digress, skin color has to do with the amount of melanin that a person produces, which generally corresponds to the climate that their ancestors originated from. Generally, peoples from regions closer to the equator have darker skin and those farther from it have lighter skin.

Therefore most women buy into the craze that they need to look like models...hence the excessive tanning. The problem is their skin will never get that "healthy" glow. People overtan, and burn, and then their skin either ends up peeling (and it's white undereath, plus you never see models peel....) or their skin ends up looking like burnt leather.

2 pages, and over 160 views, and still not a single woman has gave a real answer as to WHY they tan.

You know dam well that a few tan-aholics have viewed this thread but wont dare give honest insight to why they do it.

Women compare themselves to one another like it's a competition. I have had many friends and girlfriends admit this to me. From makeup to hair to clothes to everything....tanning is included in this

Exactly the reason so little of them will address this thread

doesnt matter what a women says, MOST of what they do is out of pure social pressure to compete with other females.

It has little to do with actually attracting a guy.

That picture above is a bunch of BS camera and lighting tricks.

Look at how much shadow is behind her in the last pic compared to the first. She is also standing at a differenit angle. She is also NOT smiling in the fist pic. THAT makes a huge subconscious difference when you look at it. Take off your blinders and go look at so many before and after pics when companies sell products to females, the before pic almost always has the model not smiling.

Women are horrible at picking up small details of camera and lighting tricks and are so eager to beleive ploys that are used to make a sale

It's not my thing, as I embrace my naturally pale skin; I like the porcelain-skinned look. However, I used to try to tan in the sun when I was a self-conscious and awkward teen, because the attitude that a tan is somehow healthier or more attractive is fairly prevalent. I don't tan, though, I burn and freckle, so I learned a lesson and invested in some pretty expensive sunscreens.

Now I'm 35 and I look years younger than most of my contemporaries who spent considerable time lying out on the beach slathered in oils, or locked up in tanning booths. And I married a guy who likes porcelain-skinned women.

I still see people passing judgy comments about pale women being 'pasty'--obviously an unflattering comparison--and I'm sure that's what motivates a lot of the tanning craze. I have heard people say the tanning booths are relaxing, but IMO I'd rather pay for a massage.

Thats just their way of justifying their reasoning for ruining their skin.

Do you really think they are going to admit they are doing it out of vanity ?
