Author mickleb Posted June 30, 2010 Author Posted June 30, 2010 Those are so lovely. Thank you, TM. Feel ugh today. Don't think I helped myself by not eating properly last night. Just wiped out this morning. Gonna share my chemo story here, as it sums her up better than any other: Penny first got cancer four years ago. I chose to put her through the chemo after some serious chats with the vet. I was warned, however, how horrible a process it was and that the last dog at that surgery had needed to be muzzled, just to get it through the door. The treatment made Penny quite ill but, despite this, she trotted in every week, sat down and offered her paw to the nurse for the needle. I rescued her after her fourth home but she still trusted humans so much. How could I not miss a dog that cool? x
sb129 Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 She sounds like an amazing dog. Hugs MickleB- we have a young dog, and we call her our first daughter. She is a wonderful pet and is so gentle and patient with our baby daughter. I can't imagine life without her- but we will have to one day. Pets are such important parts of our lives, I totally understand how sad you must be feeling. Be comforted in the fact that because of you, one more dog had a happy life and was loved.
Author mickleb Posted July 2, 2010 Author Posted July 2, 2010 This was written for a male dog, by a man but I like it anyway: A Prince Amongst Men For a dog, he was old, it was no great surprise, for the years take us all in the end. And tomorrow will dawn without obvious change, bar the loss of a family friend. So why all the tears and the stinging remorse that you vainly attempt to control? Because what he gave, lent a rhythm to life, in tune with your body and soul. He was part of your being, the best of your heart; the spark in the warmth of a smile. He fostered the softness you thought you could hide In his childish but secretive smile. He moulded your manners to match his routine, yet offered far more than he took. He adopted your language until, with a glance, he could read you like reading a book. And now that it's over you mope like a babe and grope for the words to explain. How something so lacking in human finesse could cause such illogical pain. Yet, did you but know it, you've added your name to a ledger as endless as time. Where the biggest and strongest and bravest of men are featured in line after line. And if any should scoff at the catch in your voice or the glint of a tear in your eye, regard them with pity and smile on the stars for the feelings their senses deny. Be proud to remember as long as you live that soul-mate who never complained. He guarded your children, he took you for walks, and only reneged when it rained! He saw you as perfect: a prince among men. A hero to love and adore. And all of these things were the man you became the minute you walked through the door. Now the house is as silent as yesterday's prayers, yet here in the gloom of the day, With that magical instinct he always possessed, he is only a whisper away. If love could have saved you, Penny, you would have lived forever. (I know that, for sure.) x
HeavenOrHell Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 Aw..that poem brought tears to my eyes. Sorry to hear about Penny hun I always think that pets who are loved take that love with them when they pass, the love never dies. (((((hugs)))))
Author mickleb Posted July 3, 2010 Author Posted July 3, 2010 Thank you H. I have never felt anything like the warmth and peace we shared in the minutes before she went. I know I will never forget that. I like to think of her being cared for by Lord Frith (Watership Down) and every time the sun shines on me, she is reminding me of that love. (And I don't particularly care how mental that makes me sound..!) x
TaraMaiden Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 With all the stuff we get to read on this forum, Mick, I figure that's the sanest thing I've read for ages...........
McGrupp Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 hopefully this will cheer you up: Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together... Author unknown...
HeavenOrHell Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Aw... When our cat Meg was put to sleep (at home) I stroked her and talked to her, just want them to take our love with them you know? To feel loved in their last moments. When our beagle Willow was put to sleep it was after a recurring illness and in the following weeks I felt a weight had lifted because I felt she was happy and at peace, I also unexpectedly felt her presence sometimes which surprised me, the first time it happened it made me tearful with joy, soppy heh. Even though we were distraught at having to have her put to sleep the weeks that followed were the most peaceful of my life. She was an ex lab dog (rescued) and she is the reason I went on to care for birds You don't sound mental, well if you do then I do too Thank you H. I have never felt anything like the warmth and peace we shared in the minutes before she went. I know I will never forget that. Author mickleb Posted July 5, 2010 Author Posted July 5, 2010 That made me laugh, thanks TM! HOH - How awesome that you rescued an ex laboratory beagle! I think that's fantastic! And how wonderful to think our pets can go on to inspire us to do something new, like that. I wonder what The Peanut will direct me towards.. Aw - the Rainbow Bridge, McG. V. cute but a bit too like heaven for me to get my bonce around. Thank you, though! Wrong as it may be, I find some comfort in this: http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=vMvGUCTpCIY&vq=medium x

Nikki Sahagin Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I'm sorry mickleb:( I've always looked at the dog in your picture and thought what a hopeful, idealistic dog he looks. I'm a big animal lover who has lost many pets, mainly due to natural deaths but I know how horrible it can be. Animals are like our little children and when everyone else fails us, they are always there for a cuddle. Get yourself another pet soon as, not as a replacement but just to have another life to care for and love. If I lose a pet, I always get another, it seems to be an area where a 'rebound' will always grow into another loving and wonderful pet to be part of our lives
GrayClouds Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 I'm sorry mickleb:( I've always looked at the dog in your picture and thought what a hopeful, idealistic dog he looks. They say pets will take on the traits of their keepers...
