tigressA Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 I'm on OKCupid, and I have several friends who are on the site as well. Recently I've been told by a couple of them that they've received an email from the site, notifying them that they're "in the top half of the site's most attractive users" and this means that they'll be shown/be shown to more attractive people in match results. I really don't see the point of this, since the email said it won't affect match percentages. What if the "more attractive" people have a really low match percentage with you? Or what if the "more attractive" people aren't attractive to you at all? One of my friends forwarded the email to me and OKCupid has calculated attractiveness through means that don't necessarily mean you're found attractive by "more attractive" people--it's more like a popularity contest. And more to the point, why would the site do this? It just seems to breed an attitude of entitlement, like "Oh, I'm so hot that I *deserve* another hot person to date." IMO it enables people who've received that email to think that they can just coast on their looks and not have to be interesting/intelligent/witty to score a date or a potential partner.
bayouboi Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 On the plus side, at least you aren't paying them to be duped!
Crazy Magnet Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Lol I got that email a while back. I did actually laugh out loud when I opened it and read it. It was definitely a WTF moment. I found it so funny I forwarded it to my BF who also found it hilarious and we've had many good jokes at that email's expense. I think it was calculated by how many quiver matches click on your and something else, but I can't remember what. I haven't used the site for dating since December so I have never looked to see if my matches changed after the email. I can't really tell what the point of it is. Besides, who's going to tell me what's attractive and what's not!

I received the same email a few weeks ago and thought that was kind of weird as well. To me it seems like doing this might backfire along the lines that you mentioned. People feeling they "look better" then others and that creates a sense of entitlement in them. On the other hand, I have to wonder if this wasn't a clever email sent to *everyone* in order to make them feel more spontaneous, because let's face it...if you get reinforcement from any source stating that you are attractive, it boosts your self-esteem. When you feel better about yourself, it's reflected in everything you do, and that creates a cycle of positive energy.

Still though, it wouldn't do much else besides make people approach others more, and they'd likely still be coasting on their supposed attractiveness. I've gotten so many messages from cute and ugly guys alike just saying "Hey". Ooooh yeah, such a turn-on.
USMCHokie Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 I got that email too! And then my head blew up to the size of a giant watermelon. I think I'm going to put it on my resume.
Sivok Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 I got that on PoF, not OKC. Hell I don't mind it! It's flattering, haha
