What's it all about? How does it work?

spent 1 hour talking about who i was and what i wanted to gain from the session, explained that i wanted my personality back, that i felt like a black cloud was over me, that i had terrible thoughts of my ex and new partner, that i was struggling to see my son cos it hurt to much, he relaxed me for second hour, i was listening to his voice for what seemed like 10minutes, i was awoken 1 hour later and he had put positive thoughts in my subconsceounsce and seems to have erased my black cloud and anxiety! i drove home singing and ignored a text from my ex with a little smile on my face, i go back next week for a follow up! hope the long term results are as impressive as how i felt as i walked out!

Oh, I've heard of that. Glad it worked for you!

In Australia, a hypnotherapist got busted lately for putting false memories into people's heads while they were 'under'. He lied and told them that they had raped people and hurt their families, and when these patients were back in the real world, their families were wondering why they were telling all these stories that were untrue. And they tried to kill themselves from the guilt of a memory that wasn't even theirs!

Because of that scenario (and I don't there are a lot fo hypnotherapists in Australia either) - I think I'll pass. Which is a shame, coz in theory, it sounds great.

Oddly enough, I just used a hypnosis tape to attract a wonderful but short-lived relationship to me that ended abruptly. Fortunately there were no negative emotions involved other than sadness that ended too soon. The message I'm getting is that I can attract an even better relationship that will be stronger and more durable than the last one. I'm getting much clearer in my goal and intention now. This definitely works if you believe in yourself. The subconscious mind is extraordinarily powerful in shaping your life according to your thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

brownowl,

I'm glad you found something that works so well for you. I've also heard that it's a good idea to do regular follow-ups after the initial bunch of sessions, perhaps every 6 or so months.

LTC,

One way to get around that is to just take your own audio recorder into session with you. Most professional, ethical hypnotists will not object, though you may be required to sign a waiver that the recording will be for your personal use only.

If, at some point, hypnotherapy does feel like a good option for you, you could check the registry at the Australian Hypnotherapists' Association.

You're right, though: there are charlatans and incompetents in every profession - doctors, psychiatrists, lawyers, accountants - so we do need to use good judgment when we contract for their services.
