nixa Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 If you live with your partner, do you expect them to discuss things with you, such as having a big party or having a houseguest stay for the weekend, prior to making a commitment?
Confusedalways Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 If you live with your partner, do you expect them to discuss things with you, such as having a big party or having a houseguest stay for the weekend, prior to making a commitment? seriously? even when I was 5 my parents alerted me if a guest was coming. You better believe a SO better.
Lakeside_runner Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Umm... isn't that the whole purpose of living together? Kinda like a trial household?
TouchedByViolet Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 seriously? even when I was 5 my parents alerted me if a guest was coming. You better believe a SO better. I actually thought the same thing. My parents would tell me to help clean because X was coming over. As a general rule, communcation is key if you want a relationship to last.
Star Gazer Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 If you live with your partner, do you expect them to discuss things with you, such as having a big party or having a houseguest stay for the weekend, prior to making a commitment? That depends. For a party, sure. But not necessarily for a house guest, that "permission" might kinda be retroactive... a sort of, "Hey babe, my buddy Dave is coming into town and I told him he could crash in our spare bedroom on Saturday if he needs to." I'd be fine with that.

I'd be fine with that. This is kind of what I was talking about. Not the lack of a mention that the SO had made plans, but the difference between "Hey, I wanted to have a party in a couple weeks, what do you think of XX day/this kind of party/who to invite/or whatever" and "Oh hey, psfyibtw I'm having a party with 50 people in a couple weeks, you're gonna help shop and clean right?" Star Gazer, for you, what's the difference between a party and a houseguest?
Star Gazer Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Star Gazer, for you, what's the difference between a party and a houseguest? I don't think I understand? I think the distinction is obvious. A houseguest is a houseguest. Like, a person... or maybe two if it's a couple or something. A party is something that involves some level of planning - more food, more drinks, a BBQ or something, and involves multiple people.

So for you the difference wouldn't be the principle of consulting the SO about the use of shared space, or something like that, it would simply be a matter of the number of people, due to the level of preparation.
