If they ASKED you to elaborate and then stopped talking to you once you did, I really don't know what to say. Maybe that isn't the reason they stopped talking to you at all. There are freaky occurrences and coincidences in dating, and I'm sure it's not limited to face-to-face dating.

Being humble doesn't mean to "minimize it for anyone". Seems like you need to mature a bit.

Ha - I even phrased it in such a way that often when I attend other academic's presentations and read their reasearch papers I feel out of my depth and that I have long way to go. I thought that was humble enough. I also said that the PhD was the hardest thing I ever did (which is the truth).

True, it's a small smaple size of 2. But I am already sceptical about online dating and this is just putting me off completly.

I am tempted to e-mail the guys and politely ask them what is the reason that they stopped responding. I doubt they will tell me the truth though.

Its been said already, but its insecurity. Some men have the primitave belief that they should be smarter than and make more money than the woman. They fear that her being superior in those aspects will cause her to lose respect for him and cheat on him with someone more her level in those aspects.

I think it would be a definite plus! I plan to get a PhD or Masters myself after I finish my Bachelors. I can't say I've met anyone my age yet who has a PhD yet though. I think these men who are rejecting you for being educated are probably not the sorts of guys you want to be with!

I find a female that can help me with thermal dynamics to be extremely desireable.

OK, guy no 3 and me just started e-mailing. Up to e-mail no. 4. I am not talking about work at all at this point. See if I can at least get a date out of this one :)

and FTR if a girl had a PhD it is a turn-on.

It shows she has motivation, is goal oriented, a hard worker, and has some form of intelligence.

Why a guy is turned off by that list is beyond me.

Perhaps those guys were intimidated by your level of success and knowledge. No loss on your part.

Thanks Pyro, much appreciated :)

If you and CE ever do a trip around Aussie-land you are more than welcome to stop by Perth.

Deal.:) How are the beaches?

It will be tough to get her there because she is set on living in the Northern Territory.

As long as you have a PhD in nice rack also, then it doesn't matter.

We have VERY nice beaches, white sand and perfectly blue water, hope you can handle the waves though.

I have never been to NT.....

I wouldn't be put off by a women with a PhD in math. But I wouldn't want to date one. Not because she's too intelligent but because I think one "weirdo" per couple is enough...

They can't be that stupid, it has to be something else. Only a complete moron would stop talking to an attractive woman (online as well) just because she has a PhD in Math.

Did you message these guys or did they message you? If they fall into the top 20% of guys online, then it makes sense (tons of women want them). If not, then I have no explanation other than sheer stupidity. As long as you're not stuck up about your PhD, it shouldn't hurt you at all.

I'd be down with it.

I'm thinking I could make her laugh with math jokes involving coefficients of friction, thermodynamics, tangents to the curves...

Its clear that you are proud of your phd (and you should be!), but by telling people upfront that you have a phd in mathematics, you are proclaiming that mathematics is BIG part of your life. Add to this that you are meeting people online, you may be creating a certain stereotype which many guys will find undesireable.

Further, advanced mathematics is a fairly niche, people with poor maths skills will not be able to relate to your work at all. I suggest you let it take a backseat or find someone who loves math.

Good luck!

Y = mx+b is orgasmic... personally though I wouldn't find MATH girl to be a plus or minus. get it lol (plus or minus)

Green, you have to have an appreciation of math's complexities to catch onto its jokes...

You: Would you mind if we integrate, because I'd like to approximate the area underneath your curves...

PhD Math girl: lol...

I well recall the 'my love for you is like a fractal - it goes on forever' joke... :D

While most people here would say no biggie, it really depends on how you approach it. If it was the first time I was talking to a guy (be it online or IRL), I asked him what he did for a living and he started going into excruciating detail about his PhD paper, I'd be beating a hasty retreat.

Dude that was awesome!

technically 'y=mx+c' is a physical relationship though haha. man i hate calculus.

I'm not a PhD er...its just piled higher and deeper lol

Is this really such a turn off?

Not to me. I would have loved to have married a PhD -- I have a science PhD myself. Strangely, the women in my grad program seemed to take great pains to look for men outside the academic environment.

Have you tried dating highly educated men who would better appreciate your experience and understand your love of research? (Plus, in math, engineering, and the physical sciences, the male/female ratio would work very much in your favor.)

Its also a one to one mapping...

Calc is a nice tool for the tool kit. So are statistics. Beyond that you are moving into the theoretical realm...

Need to shut up now, because I wasn't even a math major lol
