What is love? It's my estimation that most relationships are based on attraction and mutual benefit. Our modern idea of love has been developed as a concept through art and literature, which is largely a world of fiction. In this artistic world, love is a transcendental phenomenon which describes an altruistic and deep affection for another. Per my observations, this is very rare in romantic relationships, which seem to me to be the more practical union of attraction and mutual benefit. I liked what Jiddu Krishnamurti had to say about love, which you can read in the link below, because if we are to understand love as art and literature describe it, it really has nothing to do with romantic relationships. I believe if we understood the motivations behind romantic relationships as they are, rather than as they are idealized in art, relationships could better be managed than they currently are. What say you?

Sorry, I couldn't get past the second paragraph where he grossly mischaracterizes the love of God as a projection of love of self. If anything, it's really quite the opposite. Typical post-modern moral relativism revolving around the unanswerable question, "Does life imitate art, or does art imitate life?" It's good to question the nature of love, and try to understand it's many manifestations, but to simply decide that it is merely an idea or even an ideal thwarts the quest before it begins.

I’m specifically interested in how love is characterized in art and popular media, and whether it bears any resemblance to what actually occurs in relationships for the vast majority of people. Any opinions on this?
