allina Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Some people choose to tan and others don't, who cares? Get off your high horse
brainygirl Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I don't tan, but I do notice that my complexion is better when I've been outside and have developed a tan from that. So I can sorta see why people do it, but some people definitely over do it and it can raise your risks of developing skin cancer.
Neutrino Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I never go on sunbeds. The most common type of lamps used in sunbeds are medium pressure Mercury lamps emitting in wavelengths of 253.7 nm, and 365 nm... 253.7 nm photons are energetic enough to break your cell membranes and DNA - this increases the risk of skin cancer, 365 nm photons can still cause considerable damage to your skin and actually penetrates deeper into tissue than 253.7 nm. Long term damages are possibly : accumulated skin damage, rapid skin ageing, irregular pigmentation, melanoma and skin cancer. However - let's remember the sun has some positive effects too... so while I avoid sunbeds, I do enjoy controlled and protected sun-exposure... If YOU feel comfortable with healthy skin at whatever color - let the people talk.... if you want some color (tan or otherwise) do so with care.
climbergirl Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Used to tan a lot-outside and tanning booths. I recently had a photofacial done and was shocked by all the damage that surfaced on my face and chest. That scared me straight and sunscreen is now my friend.

Get off your high horse Honestly I wasn't trying to be on a "high horse"...sorry if it came off that way. I was looking for responses such as Marsle's which gave insight into why so many others do it.

make me believe Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I don't feel comfortable going to tanning beds anymore because I'm paranoid about skin cancer & skin damage. I went for about 4 months at the beginning of spring to build up a tan for 3 years in a row, though. I never got super dark because I'm VERY pale to begin with, but I really prefer myself with a light tan. I don't think my skin is "creamy" white...I feel pasty!! Now I'm taking it easy though, and using sunscreen whenever I go outside. I've noticed a little bit of color from being at the pool the last couple of weekends but I'd like to get more because I'm still super white.. I feel more confident with a tan.
Maggotface Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 It's a big trend where Im from too, my mother just got into tanning which makes me sad because she already has very sun damaged skin and it'll only make it worse :/ I've never been to a tanning bed and dont ever plan on it but I dont think I have one other girl friend who feels the same. I don't have anything against tanning outside, I have a healthy glow from being outside so much (I just look sick when I'm pale). I just dont see the point in paying for what I can get from spending time outdoors. The most unhealthy thing I've seen is when high school girls right before prom will spend so much time in tanning beds so they can get really dark before the dance.
Jilly Bean Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Tanning, in moderation, isn't the evil it's made out to be. We actually thrive on sunlight for mood and the vitamin D. No ones ever seen a happy vampire, after all.

No ones ever seen a happy vampire, after all. Yeah, I think it's best to tan moderately in the sun though & skip the beds altogether. I don't think badly about people who use tanning beds, but honestly I think they probably cause even more damage than we know about. I know whenever I used to go in them, I would seriously feel like I was being baked! It kinda freaked me out. I agree with you that some sun exposure is obviously a good thing, though!

SummerLady Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 You look great the way you are. I think it is good that you don't want to ruin your skin and please don't go the other route and rub orange paint on yourself. I agree the tan thing is way out I think...I know some who spray tan but its not as popular as it was before. Woogle how is Tiki Bar doing, is it still popular, have not beent there in 10 years or so...I used to love that place:)
zengirl Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 I'm from Florida, and I never liked tanning or even being tan. I don't like the idea of aging early or hurting my skin (my mom does tan, smoked for years, ate crap until recently, and still has lovely skin, so I think genetics are on my side. . . but maybe mine will be even better!). But it's an easy choice for me because I like being pale. I'm like you -- I feel classic, ivory, and beautiful. When I'm tan, I actually feel like I've got a layer of paint or something on my skin, like it isn't mine. I do use a moisturizer with a hint of color for summer, but never for very many days straight. I live in Korea now (returning to Florida soon) where they all hate tanning and use whitening creams (probably also dreadful for your skin). So funny how the world is! I do like being out and about in the sun, but I wear sunblock 70. It's funny because I don't even burn -- as a child, I was a beachgoer and I always had a tan -- but I just prefer my skin it's natural color.

Like Jilly Bean said the sun isn't the evil it's made out to be, we really do need the vitamins and there might be other things than D that are acquired from the sun. I have never been to a tanning salon and would never do it. I have heard of some being addicted to it, and what blows my mind is that they are so popular in states that have an abundance of sun...I used to tan in the winter sun:)
zengirl Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Like Jilly Bean said the sun isn't the evil it's made out to be, we really do need the vitamins and there might be other things than D that are acquired from the sun. Though, it's worth noting, you get the vitamins you need even through sunblock. Sunblock doesn't literally block the sun -- just certain parts of it, the harmful parts. Also, while you get some small portion of vitamins from the tanning beds, mostly they're focusing on delivering the harmful parts that cause you to tan. It's not the healthiest sun cocktail.
jamesum Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 A bit of tan is beautiful. But some white people tan so much that they look weird.
