So my friend has been with his gf for about 2 and a half years. He say's that he thinks it's time him and his gf break up but he wants to do it in a special way. He thinks that a powerpoint presentation might be the way to go. What do you guys think of this? Anyone got any stories on being broken up with or breaking up with people through powerpint.

This would be so unbelievably legendary...I wish I had thought of this...

I think it'd be great on an episode of The Office or something...would definitely fit right in with that show...

I really don't think, she would think it's funny....!!! Someones heart is not a joke..If it is time for him to move on. Then he should tell her face to face. Tell her why and move on. Like a real man.....

I really hope that you are joking...

But to answer your question, no.

Someone I dated told me they weren't looking ahead with a relationship with me, via email, after not seeing each other for nearly a month.

I wanted to know how he felt about me, and that's the answer I got. :o:cool:

There might be something to this. So much of the trauma of a breakup comes from the ambiguity. "What did I do wrong?" "Is it really over" etc. A well-organized set of bullet-points might go a long way towards getting the healing process off on the right foot. Just make sure you don't overdo the clipart and sound effects unless it's really crucial to making your point.

Honestly, great idea. Be sure to use lots of great graphs and really annoying animations and sound effects. It is face to face, you also have the PowerPoint backing you up.

That's tacky.

A relationship isn't a business transaction where you need pie charts and graphs to "prove a point" Your friend can easily open his mouth and answer all the questions she'd have.

2.5 years at that? Come on.

Also, inserting a video or two into the presentation of one of your "timeless moments" in the relationship should help keep the audience awake...it's a staple of our death-by-powerpoint briefings...

He is going to be with her when he does it.

I'd suggest a more traditional aproach like just talking to her at her house and then leaving after he said what he needs to say.

Or the other traditional approach where you say 'I break with thee, I break with thee, I break with thee,' and then you throw dog poop on her shoes.

That is a whole lot better..

So would it be just him and his gf at the presentation? Or would others be invited? I'd go if snacks were provided or is it simply going to be "death by powerpoint" as Hokie suggested?

The snacks better be high quality at that...nice cushy seats and those wonderful long "boardroom" tables you see on shows on the telly.

Seriously, if he's going to be there, he can open up his mouth and tell her. why put all the work into putting in a presentation that makes him look heartless and cruel vs just talking to her person to person?

He would only be showing it to her. Doing it infront of a crowd would be incredibly mean and I doubt she would like that one bit. Seriously who would break up with someone infront of a crowd and provide snacks lol? I honestly don't think you guys quite understand how this will work. He is just going to provide a few graphs etc to explain why they broke up. Also some clip art etc to help make her feel better. I think it sounds like quite a nice idea to be honest.

LOL. Michael Scott is the Man. Actually, Dwight might be better suited for this job.

Hmmm...I'd reserve judgement on that, if I were you, until SHE tells you whether it's a nice idea or not.

I think he's actually a coward.

He's hiding behind a mechanism to let it do his speaking for him.

What does that say about his whole sincerity and approach to the relationship?

It isn't a business deal, it's not a negotiable transaction and it's not a clear-cut-and-dried subject.

What is she going to do - take notes?

Are they going to have a second business meeting to discuss the potential parameters and the implications of putting the project into practice?

Is she to respond via e-mail or simply sign on the dotted line?

I tell you, if my guy presented me with a powerpoint break-up, he'd be wearing the projector screen up his @$$.

Sideways.

Actually, I think you'll find Ricky Gervaise is The Man. Michael Scott is just a poor transatlantic imitation.

Which is why it would be much better to give her an original break-up, as opposed to some tacky attempt to be clever. Which fails.

Well I think sometimes words are just not enough...so a graph and a pie chart here and there is not such a bad idea. LOL. kidding... I really cracked up the moment I saw this thread though.hahaha..Seriously, to show respect, it is best to do it in person, but if it's long distance, yeah I might consider the powerpoint idea! lol... Ok really, best to do it in person.

Well he's got my vote.

Posted

I'm afraid votes are not applicable.

we'll need a detailed presentation, with illustrations, graphs, pie-charts and percentage evaluations as to why you feel this is an acceptable proposition.

On my desk by 9.00 tomorrow morning please.

Posted

Ah but you don't know what I'm voting him as.

Douchebag of the year comes to mind. I do admire his moxy though.

Posted

Ah, ok yah, Get your (power)point.

Yes, that vote counts.

Place it in the ballot box, with Gordon Brown's....;)

Posted

I'm sorry, but it wouldn't matter if he did it in person or not.

The power point dissection of why he was breaking up would be hugely tacky and patronizing. It suggests he thinks she won't understand without charts and graphs and it being broken down to minute detail. It sounds like he thinks she is a moron. Its is just rude.

It has been done before http://powerpointbreakup.freewebspace.com/

I would say that is a solid presentation. While slightly rude, it is memorable and gets the point across without getting emotional which is a problem in any breakup. Having data to back yourself up is good so you don't get sucked back in if she starts to bring up emotional things that will detach you from your rational side. The only thing that comes up now is that your friend is not original at all. He should think of something new.
