I was having a discussion with a male friend today and he made some comments about people who Twitter (mainly women.) He doesn't mind people who use Twitter to share important events but he says that he is turned off completely by women in mid-life (our age group) who Twitter useless information like "I'm going shopping today", "Just left to pick up my kids", etc.

What does everyone think about it? If you were dating someone and knew their Twitter name would you stop dating them because you were flooded with silly useless news from them? Would you feel like the person doesn't have the mentality of someone their own age? Would you think that the person has no substance to their lives? Or that they are an attention whore?

Meh- my lovebug and I both have Twitter accounts. We both follow people/organizations, but either of us rarely tweet. And when we do, we try to make it engaging. But I guess different people have different definitions of what's engaging. Some think shopping is engaging, some think global warming is.

OTOH, it's sometimes hard to be engaging in 144 characters or less!

I dunno- I guess if the person spent a lot of time on Twitter, and had to describe every minute of every day, that would be worrysome. If not, I'd blow it off.

I've also noticed a lot of new users tweet more often than others. After a while, the new wears off, and it gets boring.

I hate anyone who uses twitter to update constantly on dumb things. One girl I had on Facebook linked her twitter account and it was a CONSTANT barrage of crap on my page. Thankful I eventually pissed her off enough to remove me.

Seriously, no one cares. Stop posting about everything you do.

I have very strong feelings on Twitter, and anything Web 2.0 related. In my line of work social media is essential to improving customer service and in aiding to create a strong online presence. It is the best form of PR a company can have if done right and in conjunction with other sources of branding and materials.

Having said that, there are a lot of people who use Twitter for various different reasons ranging from providing excellent sources of information to the most useless tweets that a 10 yr old might find amusing. But in both cases the onus is on ourselves and the people WE CHOOSE to follow. If you find that you are following people on Twitter who are useless, you have all the power in the world to simply "unfollow" them. End of story. So people should quit whining about useless Tweeps and use Twitter effectively by choosing wisely. Take control in how you use the platform and you will have 0 complaints an nothing but gains to be had. Follow worthy people and organizations who know what they are doing and unfollow those who don't meet your standards.

And no I would not think someone is an attention whore because they tweet about useless stuff, I respect all user's needs for the application whether beneficial to me personally or not. I simply would not follow them.

Again, I control my experience not the other way around.

A matter of taste

People are different

I am a woman and I would be totally turned off by someone who constantly tweets useless info - male or female
