Kaplan Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Elswyth's "importance of physical appearance" thread made me think about this: Someone once asked me the following question to determine if I preferred looks over personality: "What if the whole human race was wiped out except for you and two women. One of those women was extremely beautiful but had a horrible personality, and the other woman was ugly but had a wonderful personality. Which one would you choose?" I said, "I would have an obligation to mate with both women, obviously. For the sake of the future of the human race." But here's my modified version of the same question (minus the biology,) designed to reveal which gender is the most hung-up on looks: 1. Gender. 2. Which person of the opposite sex do you choose (the human race will continue regardless of your choice): A. Person of opposite sex with unbelievably beautiful/ handsome physical appearance, but with average personality or B. Person of opposite sex with average physical appearance, but with unbelievably wonderful personality 3. Give an explanation (if you want.) I will start: 1. Male 2. B. 3. The beautiful girl will be more interesting at first, but once imagination is replaced by the reality of how boring she is, she will just be annoying. The personality girl won't be as exciting at first, but she'll be much more interesting in the long run. I hope Elswyth doesn't get mad at me for stealing her thread idea (assuming anyone comes to this thread.)

A would not even be considered. I am not attracted to anyone with a meh personality, even if he might be Mr. Universe 2010.

Depends 3. If the goal is to repopulate the earth, I would choose one with great personality, because I believe personality is partially genetic. Great personality would make sure the people get along with each other better, and would help humanity prosper again sooner, hopefully. If the society is already there, and I'm just mating to propagate my genetic seed, I would choose looks. Because looks is also partially genetic, and people with looks have an advantage of getting ahead in a society. Life is a combination of beauty pageant, popularity contest, and blind luck (not my words, saw it on the net somewhere). But the reality is I would nail both chicks, but humanity would be doomed anyway. I've had a vasectomy.

I tried to remove the "future of humanity" from the equation. The world continues no matter what. For some reason there are only two people of the opposite sex available to you. Which one are you more attracted to? And don't try to imagine what your ego would be like if there were literally only two women in the world you had any chance with. That would screw everything up.

Just kidding, I don't even know if that's a real thing. If it is a real thing it seems unfair since we haven't made contact with any populated planets besides our own. I mean, in the universe there's pretty much an infinite number of planets, so it's pretty ridiculous for our species to claim that we have the most attractive guy in the universe. That being said, I probably am the most attractive guy in the universe. :cool:I'm just going to assume I'm right about that and wait for E.T. to correct me . . .
