Our cocktail hour is the first hour of our reception and it is on the balcany of our venue. We have the option of either having our guests watch us do introductions and our first dance from the balancy or come downstairs to their seats prior to that and watch that way.

So my question is would you rather:

a) watch a couple/bridal party get introduced and watch the first dance from the balcany

b) come downstairs and sit at tables for introductions/first dance

Well first off, it's spelled "Balcony";)

I think MOST people would want to be down and seated comfortably for the action as it were. Otherwise it's too much of a show. "You stay there in the audience and watch us do our wedding stuff"

BUT, I hate all formalities, so I would choose to stay standing by the bar, wherever that was ! ( I'm a weirdo though)

I would go for B, so people are more involved in the action and not just spectating from a distance.

I would prefer to watch from the balcony...mostly because I would like to enjoy the cocktail hour and mingle prior to being chained to my seat. Additionally, if I am seated, I HAVE to watch and basically remain silent. Let me stand for a bit more. Besides, the first dance in my own experience is a very intimate and special moment...nice to have a little room and not be watched sooo closely you dont feel alone. Really, you will remember it.

Having them watch from the balcony seems kinda strange to me. It's more like you're putting on a performance or something. Like you're very separate & secluded from your guests or the "audience."

They should be seated when you're having your first dance.

If you want more wedding-specific advice, the boards at weddingbee.com might be more help to you. Not to discourage you from posting about it here, but those gals over there are just as excited as you are, and you're bound to get way more responses. :)

I don't know I kind of like "balancy".

balcony, it seems like a unique and fun idea! plus if people are seated they feel like they have to watch, or remain silent.

Balcony, to be close to the bar.

First of all congrats :)

I'd say combine both - especially if your guests are a mixed crowd, in this way they can make their own individual choice.

If they all HAVE to be concentrated in one place - I'd allow them 15 minutes to get a drink from the bar and be seated.

The venue doesn't want us to do that, it's either on the balcony or the floor where the tables are. My fiance really really wants them to be on the balcony because he thinks everyone would really remember something like that. I personally would rather them be on the floor but I'm open to comporomising. He let me chose the song for the mother/son dance so that was our compromise. :)
