I am not being judgemental about hooking up. I just really want to know the answer to this question.

At 40, I have never felt so old. For the first time in my life, I am meeting adults--people in their 20s--who are sexually active, yet have never been in any kind of relationship. Many have never even been on a date. Their romantic/sexual experiences consist entirely of "hooking up"--spontaneous, no-strings sex with strangers.

Don't get me wrong. Hooking up went on when I was young, too. We didn't call it that back then. We called it having a one-night stand. One night stands were common, but they were by no means the norm. When I was in my 20s, meeting a sexually active person who had never dated or been in any kind of a relationship was unheard of. Now, it seems fairly ordinary.

Has hooking up completely replaced dating and relationships among 20-somethings, or am I imagining things?

There are plenty of 20 somethings who live with their bf/gf so no, I don't think people are just hooking up.

^^^^^ agree with the above. I'm a twenty something and have plenty of friends in monogamous LTRs. Hooking upisn't necessarily more prevalent, just more visible because it flies in the face of tradition.

HEH!

Let me know these 20's somethings you know that want to just hook up! Because at least 90% of all my friends or family are either with a boyfriend or girlfriend (that they're stupidly bored or unhappy with) or on a long journey looking for someone to be with. So I would say no, though it is more noticeable and visible its has not necessarily replaced being with someone. Like I said, I know more people who hate one-night stands, hook-ups or friends-with-benefits and No-strings-attached relationships. Meanwhile, I struggle to find any women who doesn't want to "take it further".

Is it just me or is "hooking up" the most annoying phrase ever? What's wrong with plain old "screwing". Enough of this mealy-mouthed nonsense.

LOL--it is a kind of bonehead phrase. However, I think "hooking up" can mean almost anything from necking to intercourse, so "screwing" probably wouldn't work as a substitute.

Hooking up dosn't just mean sex, it could be kissing too you know.

And blame it on the sex revolution, when was that 60s? 70s? Way before I was born? lol

Monogamy is dying off.
