CLC2008 Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 My day starts at 6:45am and ends anywhere from 6pm-8pm (depending on workload, meetings, etc.) and includes commute/travel time. Add in after work doctor’s appointments, errands, friends, family, babysitting (extra work/income). Draining? Sure, that's life. But I do plan on winning the mega millions so that should take care of it
Treasa Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 I do my cooking in about two hours on Sunday for the entire week. I then have a wonderful breakfast, lunch, and dinner that only take a couple of minutes per meal to heat up. I get my shower done in 10-15 minutes, get dressed and do my hair in 10 minutes. Work, for me, is only 20 minutes away. I refuse to do long commutes. So I get up at 6:40am, am at work by 7:30am, get done with work at 5pm, and am usually home by 5:20pm. I eat, which takes me until 6pm, and usually go to bed at 10pm. That leaves me four hours every single day to myself, and that's working 42.5 hours a week with a full hour for lunch every day.
Citizen Erased Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 The thought of working those crummy hours, 5 days a week, in an office, for the rest of my life...well I may as well just not get out of bed in the morning. And I'm only 22. I've got at least another 33 years of that crap.

Lauriebell82 Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 Frankly, the last time I worked 8.30-5.30, I had no time for ANYthing. I woke up at 6.30, took an hour to fix breakfast, eat, and get ready, took an hour to get to work. After work, I reached home at 6.30, took an hour to get dinner, at 7.30 I bathed, took care of various errands such as throwing my trash, getting my stuff ready for the next day... voila 8.30. I only had TWO hours a day to myself, in which I was too tired to do anything interesting and basically only surfed the net or talked to my boyfriend, before I had to crash. Yet this is what most people DO. Isn't it a horrible life to live??? Two hours a weekday to yourself, the rest of the time to work and requisite routine. And even then I'm too tired to take the initiative to do anything fun or try anything new or learn anything. How is it that everyone's so content with it, and why can't I be? I have worked 9-5:30 the past few weeks training for my job. My actual hours are evening, 1:9:00 pm. I was not a fan of the daylight hours, it was annoying getting home so late. Being an addictions counselor is DRAINING so I have to veg out in front of the tv for an hour or so just to clear my head. By that time I was so tired I could barely get the energy to work out. I guess 8:30-5:30 is just not for everyone.
Green Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 You sound depressed. In reality you get to choose anything you want for your life. Seriously the world is full of oportunity. For me I enjoyed my work... But i alwasy did something that fit me like being a salesman or fixing tech stuff. Follow your dreams, and you'll like work.
Citizen Erased Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 Yes once you turn 23 and graduate collge, the party is over The party never started, I went from high school straight to work.
Green Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 The party never started, I went from high school straight to work. Well then take some time and go to college unless of course you have a different path to achieve ur dreams

Its the norm. Not everyone is content working long hours, although for those few who work really less=deviant behavior, unless your a highly acclaimed academic, celebrity, sportsman or a billionaire.
Peaceful Guy Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 , although for those few who work really less=deviant behavior, that's just not true!
ADF Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Americans work the longest hours of anyone in the industrialized world. We also have the shortest vacations. People in this country are frazzled--i.e. exhausted, stressed-out, frustrated. They aren't "content." They are just resigned to what seems inevitable.
Jilly Bean Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 OP - are you young? Are you currently in your first professional job? Transitioning from the freedom of college life into the grind can be tough. It's hard to say goodbye to all the leisure time, late nights, etc. It seems like you had energy to spare in college, and could live on 4 hours of sleep a night, but somehow working makes you need a nap in the afternoon. lol If the whole lifestyle really doesn't suit you, then maybe you should try a career that offers you more flexibility, like law enforcement, flight attendant, owning your own business, etc. Otherwise, you just need to work harder to find more free-time during the week. Maybe try to get errands done on the weekends, so that your evenings during the week aren't so packed with other things.
sb129 Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Hm, I suppose that could be it. I could be spending more time than necessary on certain things, although I really like to be able to sit down for a good breakfast instead of grabbing a granola bar on the run. So that takes half an hour to make and eat, and 15 minutes to clean up, brush my teeth, and do my toiletries, and 10 to dress and do my hair, 5 to get my stuff and get down to the carpark (live in an apartment). I'd swear that the majority of women take far longer than 10 minutes to dress and do their hair, though. Taking time out to have a good breakfast is good for you. I wake up at 7am and leave work no later than 7pm and my free time is from 8pm to 2am and the weekends are all mine You only sleep 5 hours a night? I couldn't survive on that. I would hate the commute OP- spending a couple of hours a day getting to and from work really chews into your "you" time. I work 10mins drive from home and only work 16 hours a week- its the perfect balance esp with a young child. I have done the grind before and had long commutes etc, and it wasn't for me either. I did have a job once where I worked 8.30-5.30, but it was a 40min walk each way to and from work, which was brilliant that really cleared my head and gave me "me" time as well as some exercise.
