Conversations with my (separated) wife over the last couple of weeks have gotten more and more difficult and dramatic, full of tears and so on.

Found out today that she was prescribed an anti-depressant and an anti-anxiety medication and started them at the same time things started going downhill.

She is having a very negative reaction to the medication. Instead of making her better, it has had the opposite effect, including thoughts of harming herself. She's not threatening suicide, but when I asked her if she was thinking of hurting herself, she started balling her eyes out.

Sigh.

So much for GP's prescribing psychiatric medication. This is something that should be left for the psychiatrists.

She also got a second cat, which she was hiding from me. She made such a big deal out of confessing it to me, I was thinking she was going to tell me she had found a boyfriend. About halfway into that conversation I was thinking, "hooray, good for you! What a relief that we can just move on peacefully." Then she 'fessed up to adopting a second cat, and hiding it from me. I busted out laughing. To which she reacted with more balling.

Man, can I step in it or can I step in it?

At least I got her calmed down tonight, convinced her that she was indeed, having a bad reaction to the medication and that she had to get on the phone with the Dr. first thing in the AM before taking any more of this stuff. Good ol' me, the first-responder, ever-cool in an emergency.

GP's are not the best at prescribing an antidepressant. A lot of evaluation needs to be done to decide which one will be likely to work for you. Dosage is a big deal as well. A psychiatrist would be able to help some with the talk therapy or recommend someone else.

Yeah, I drove her to the doctor, who has referred her to a psychiatrist.

Sigh. It just gets better and better.
