XKatieX Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 (edited) Well I'm young, and am a healthy weight, I do not exercise, even though I should. I do however eat small throughout the day, and I also try to eat as healthy as I can. How much you eat is not nearly as important as what you eat. But as of right now if I eat healthy or at minimum, without exercising I don't gain weight at all, but with age I'm sure that will change. I was adopted so don't know too much about my genes. Author Rorschach Posted April 18, 2010 Author Posted April 18, 2010 Whether you used to be jealous or not, that's not the point I was trying to make. Can you honestly tell me that if you had the metabolism to eat whatever you want and not gain a pound, you wouldn't? To answer your original question, I don't work out. But, I have a job that makes me run around for 12 hours a day. I know it doesn't compare to actually working out, but it's better than nothing. And you're right, when we are older you will be in better shape. But we will all have to watch what we eat regardless of how healthy we are. I'm sure you're right, i probably would eat whatever I wanted.
cuppa Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 I'm sure you're right, i probably would eat whatever I wanted. but skinny is not equal to healthy. Just because someone is skinny and can eat whatever they want, that doesn't mean that they have healthy body. I don't know, I'm never fat but not skinny either. All I want is to be fit & healthy (lean & athletic look from the outside and healthy all around). I want to be 50 and can still climb Mt kilimanjaro if I want to (not that I can right now but I'm getting there )
Author Rorschach Posted April 19, 2010 Author Posted April 19, 2010 Oh and this isn't about fit vs not fit because I realize that just because somebody is skinny doesn't mean jack as far as health concerns go (and that I'm currently more healthy than a great deal of skinny people. Excuse me while I quote the OP cuppa I know I can do better health wise than alot of people. Who else can be 300 pounds (almost) have perfect blood pressure and cholesterol levels? One of the reasons I've lost weight so quickly and relatively easily is that even when I was big I ate healthy food (too much of it) and lived a relatively active life (I took stairs instead of elevators for instance). I've never been concerned with my health all that much (or at least, as it stands now, the future had me worried).
Romance Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 It sucks that some people can be skinny with no exercise and eat pure **** daily. --aka ALL of my friends. But what I've realized is it's whatever. This is life and it isn't fair. So I (wo)man up and go to the gym 4 times a week and eat salads. Its worth it.
gypsy_nicky Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Skinny people usually are skinny because excluding genetics, they usually don't overeat even if its crap food. If they do overeat, they may not see it now but towards adult life, the weight starts packing on because: A) metabolism slows down B) people become sedentary and C) all those excess calories eaten daily even if its just 10 cals adds up in time- that's why I see heaps of former HS skinny people now overweight.
phineas Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 In highschool & college I had a 33/34" waist. I was skinny but I worked out so I had a build also. I got fat when I started working as a road tech. Spending most of my day behind a wheel eating out of a drive-tru. At 38 i'm paying for that early abuse.
terra Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 I'm pretty small - also got it from my mama... I eat pretty healthy and I'm pretty active but during periods in my life where I'm not - I still stay around the same weight. I have a sister who eats really bad and doesn't is not active at all and she's still tiny.
SoundedPlum Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I'm 5'6" and about 107 lbs. I've always been petite, but I've had some weight gain that has come and gone... mostly because I indulge WAY too much. I am careless when it comes to calories and I admit, I've taken my genes for granted. I get jealous when I see people who look naturally FIT...and I mean, flat stomach and no cellulite, no jiggle, ANYTHING... and when I talk to them, they say they don't go to the gym at all and they eat fast food all the time. In all honesty, it kind of influences me and I get lazy when it comes to working out. People who are MUCH larger than me are more in shape than I am... they can run miles without getting out of breath, but with me, I can barely run 10 minutes without wheezing.
D-Lish Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I'm thin because I deny myself calories and I excercise, plain and simple. I want to eat everything in sight when I see it, I just choose not to. Don't get me wrong, I struggle with it daily. I have days where I eat a chocolate bar and a bag of chips for lunch- but I see that as my breakfast and lunch, not a snack. Then I don't eat breakfast or dinner and I hop on the treadmill at night. It's not healthy, but I count calories, and know if I indulge- I'm done for the day. I exist on will-power. I'd be 200lbs if I gave in to what I wanted to eat. My biological mom is very heavy. She was thin up until she turned 40 and then she got heavy....really heavy. I could go in that direction, I just fight not to.
shadowofman Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 The fact that some people are better able to genetically handle "bad" food, is simply related to the massive variety we humans have. And really what this means is that a subset of people today seem to be handling a post industrial diet better than others. For a person that may not be able to handle refined sugars and super fatty meats, I suggest eating more like your ancestors 10,000 years ago. They had a diet that was more in tune with nature and a diet which the human body was adapted to handle.
shadowofman Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 One persons relatively healthy is relative. Luckily epigenetic science will be able to define what this means on an individual basic within the next five years or so.
Green Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Genetics smiled upon me and gave me what I like to call the deluxe model when it comes to genes. I'm really tall so even at over 200lbs I'm slim and athletic with toned abs. But I do go to the gym and try and eat healthy.
D-Lish Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Over-weight people need to take responsibility for over-eating and stop blaming it on genetics. Over-eating is a behaviour. If someone of my gender of the same height eats the same calories as I do, there may be a slight discrepancy in weight, but it won't be profound. People get fat because they make bad choices in their food intake.

LOL yeah I used to think the same way you did toots when I was 100lbs soaking wet with rocks in my pocket and I ate anything I wanted to and never gained anything. Now I have a metabolic disorder and it is a struggle every day. I just went grocery shopping and my cart had the typical dirt and grass I have to eat every day and these thin and buff people had huge bars of chocolate, chips, fatty meats, soda, and a cart full of rubbish.
shadowofman Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 It's one hundred percent true D-lish. Assuming that there are no genetically blessed individuals, humans used to have to fight, and spend tons of energy in order to even find food. Today, people don't even have to think in order to consume massive plates all day.

Then I got sick and I blamed the medication for making me fat. In some ways it did, metabolism became very slow and one was a steroid that made me so I hungry. But I got tired of being unhappy and I started eating only 1200 calories a day and exercising at least 3 times a week. And what do you know, despite the medication, despite being ill, lost pretty much all the weight I put on. I now weigh between 115-120 (changes sometimes but I'm happy with either) and I'm happy. Like D, I have been pretty strict with my calorie intake even now, just to maintain,...skipping a meal if I've eaten something bad isn't unusual to me. It's worth being happy when I look in the mirror, feeling confident and of course the compliments. A little while ago this overweight woman walked into me when I was out and called me a skinny bitch. I said thank you for the compliment.

If you have a thyroid disorder, you're in the minority. You don't represent the majority of obese people that over-eat and claim to be a victim of metabolism. And wtf is a toots, are you calling me a fart?

You are the exception, not the rule. Not everyone has a metabolic disorder that explains their weight gain. Most I have found are right beside those skinny people with their own carts full of rubbish.
D-Lish Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 A little while ago this overweight woman walked into me when I was out and called me a skinny bitch. I said thank you for the compliment. During my marriage I got a little fat, and I lost 50lbs during my divorce- a woman got mad at me in my job and yelled at me to "eat an effing sandwich". I felt so effing great Your weight is mostly in your control. I'd be a hippo if I gave in to my urges. I am 40 now- and I cannot eat the way I used to- it's about modifying my diet and amping up the excercise. I could give in to it, or I can choose not to. I work at it every day to stay under 120lbs at 5'8". I love cinnamon rolls- but if I have one, that's my entire caloric intake for the day- so if I have one, I abstain from anything else. I hear you CE. Calling a woman a skinny bitch is like calling a man a whore ... Where's the insult?
shadowofman Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Unfortunately, while healthy eating habits are within our control, there is so much misinformation about what healthy food means. And people will crucify you if your diet contradicts theirs. The American FDA is certainly not on the side of good nutrition science. Portion control is the number one way to take control, although there are foods that you could never eat too much of. I dare anyone to over eat high fiber veggies! Can't be done.

I am in the minority but still get treated just like everyone else and deal with the stereotypes just like posted in this thread. No, I'm about 30 pounds overweight but the way people treat me, I might as well be 200 overweight. I love it when the skinny people show up on these threads to gloat.
Author Rorschach Posted May 3, 2010 Author Posted May 3, 2010 I'm not going to lie and say I ate great my whole life but was fat anyway. I ate too much. I didn't eat junkfood (EVER), I didn't eat fast food (been about 8 years since I've been to a burger joint), I drank maybe 20 oz of soda a month. Now what I did do was have seconds every meal and in the end I know that was what made me gain all that weight. But there are skinny people out there who eat much worse than I do, just as a for instance there is that one guy who eats 2-3 big macs everday and is skinny as a rail. Now I'm not saying all skinny people are like that, or that all fat people are like me, but if somebody is skinnier than I am on a worse diet, how could you possibly say that there are no other factors involved? I'm not making excuses for myself, I've been struggling to lose weight these past 3 months and been making great progress, but it still irritates me that somebody out there believes that 'oh look a fatty, what a lazy gluttonous person, lets publicly mock them then go eat burger king and twinkies'
mem11363 Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 R, I get what you are saying about junk food. Thing is that basic carbs get most people - the foods below - many people way overeat them because they taste so good: - baked potatoes with butter/sour cream - fried rice - bread with some high fat topping Have you figured out your key "problem foods" and eliminated them? Are you starting to steadily lose weight? I'm not going to lie and say I ate great my whole life but was fat anyway. I ate too much.
