Chitowngirl Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 This isn't a thread for bashing. I'm just curious...if your partner didn't make the salary that they do, would you be with them? That was the lightbulb moment for me with my ex fiance, as I asked myself, "If he was a garbage man, would I still want to marry him? Is his personality that good, that money and the lifestyle he offers me wouldn't matter?" The answer was no.
CarrieT Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I have always said no. And my first few relationships were fairly equal, but my longest relationship (12 years), I worked three jobs to get us by while he worked one. I have usually always been the go-getter and bread-winner and now that I am in my late 40s, I am tired of being the one who pays for the bulk of things and wouldn't mind dating someone who actually picked up the tab now and then, instead of this constant "dutch thing."
bananaboat11 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 This is exactly why I drive a 2008 Kia Spectra when I can have an audi a4... why I shop at old navy & target when I can shop at express, american eagle and french connection for men... why I have a modestly furnished apartment... instead of lavish, opulent furnishings. There's only 1 woman I can think of that I would marry without a prenup... and I hope one day her and I end up together... heh.
Woggle Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I am well off but if I were still single I would make an attempt to downplay it. It shows who is real and who is not. I also don't care about status symbols.
bananaboat11 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Why stop with the 2008 Kia Spectra? Sell your car and take the bus. Why even have an apartment of your own? Move back with your parents. Why waste money on "brand names" like Old Navy and Target? Go shop at Walmart. Afterall, the true love of your life will like you for you, and not of your possessions! Ha. Hahaha. PUAHAHAHAHAH!!! I, like most, have standards for living...

The minute you're labeled "bluecollar" you're down the road
bananaboat11 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I would say what I do is above the norm... average standards. I thoroughly enjoy my lifestyle... but I've attracted the wrong sort of female too many times before. Something needs to change in my life... and I enjoy what I do...

dreamingoftigers Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I own a 2008 Kia spectra 5 as well. that car has got some pep, good value. 1st new car i ever owned

aerogurl87 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I'm not a gold digger, although I would not turn down a free Louis Vuitton purse, lol. Nope I prefer finding $5 shirts at Aeropostale on their clearance rack every other weekend and walking away with a smile on my face and a pocket full of money.
aerogurl87 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I'll get you an LV bag. Wanna go to their lovely shop in France with me? Lol sure as long as they have some multicoloured monogrammed totes in stock.
tincanman99 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I have a 20 year old VW Golf GTI that is in mint condition. Compared to many cars on the road today its quite tiny and almost as small as a Mini Cooper. I also have a fairly new Audi. Anyway I like to pick them up on the first few dates in the VW . If they turn up their nose at it than they are finished. On the other hand if she says its so cute - you are a potential keeper . So far the little beast of a car has not been wrong yet .

The way I feel about this--the only career/salary criteria I have for a guy I'm dating is that he's happy with his job and that he can support himself. Ideally ours would be a two-income household; we'd contribute equally for joint expenses and then do our own thing. I would never be with a guy just because he could provide for me. Engadget Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I hate it when people are obsessed with money and material things, I really do. If I had ten million dollars right now, I wouldn't change as a person. Frankly I'd invest the majority, maybe buy a house but that'd be it. No buying flashy cars, watches, expensive clothes, etc. etc. People who are materialistic turn me away right off the bat. There's more to life than working yourself into the ground to make money.
