I'm not a romantic person. I'm not really the mushy-gushy type of person either but I know how to appreciate romantic gestures.

In the last few weeks, bf and I have been busy with our work/projects and in that few weeks, we spent about 4 hours in total together. We call each other often every day and that helps a bit.

Anyway, we are attending a conference next month and I think this would be a good opportunity for me to plan something sweet/romantic for us. The last time we attended a conference, he planned things for us and it was great! I want to return the favor since we've both been so busy.

Any ideas?

Mind sharing any romantic/sweet things you did for your partner or your partner did for you?

I have the sex part covered  but if you have any suggestions, I don't mind!

Where is the conference at?

Beaches, food. He loves sight-seeing.

Conference will be in Kuching, Sarawak; that's about 2 hours via flight from where we are. There's a beach about 30 minutes away, I'm thinking of renting a car and drive to the beach and surprise him. That's one of my plans. Which reminds me, I need to bring my GPS along.

I'd say do some research of the area and the sights. Schedule some time to sight-see the attractions. The beach as well.

Am on it. I asked around and my friends say Kuching isn't exactly a very nice place :(

Maybe I'll concentrate on something more romantic in the hotel room?

Yea I'll take you next time :love:

The cat city:p

The museums and national parks sound nice.

Can't go wrong with hotel time.;)

You'll have to take me and a certain someone.:p

Haha. Poor guy hates cats too!

Ok so I was thinking, perhaps I can arrange something with the hotel management to get a nice romantic dinner planned for us? Maybe by the pool. Too common?

I know it wouldn't be a good idea to include the Cat Museum in our sights to see so I'm going to scratch that.

I know you're the romantic type, Pyro. I can so tell! So dish out some plans already!

Of course! I cannot leave a certain someone behind and another certain someone [my bf, in case you didn't catch that]:p

Not common at all. He will appreciate the effort you put in, plus its food.:p

Well shucks.:o

A romantic stroll through one of the national parks with a possible picnic included?

A nice long walk across the beach....especially near sunrise or sunset?

How is that?

I caught that heartbreaker.:p

Leia, Aren't there some out-of-the-way inns in Sarawak? Perhaps the hotel mgt. could recommend something? I would love to go there. Rajah Brooke was a childhood hero. How about a weekends sailing?

Haha. True. He loves to eat so I am sure he will appreciate the effort!

A romantic stroll? Does that mean I need to speak romantic as well? I'm going to sound like a goofball

That sounds like a good plan, Pyro! Thanks. Yea I hope I can find a place where I can buy a picnic basket.

He's been wanting a massage and at the hotel we are staying, there's a spa. Maybe I can reserve a couple treatment?

I'm also looking into something that I can do on my own and he's tried my massage .. my hands aren't strong enough  so that's a no go.

We won't be able to stay somewhere out of the city cos our conference is in one of the hotels in the city where we are staying. I know a few places outside the city that would be very nice to explore but we don't have a lot of time.

I had to google Rajah Brooke :o

We arrive on a Tuesday and leaving on Saturday so weekend sailing is out of the question.

There really isn't much to do in Cat City other than museums and beaches.

I want to make this trip super awesome because from May onwards, we'll be super busy :(

On top of that, from August until October; his family is going to be here

The romantic stuff should come natural, so you will be fine......unless you are naturally a goofball.:p

Picnic baskets are easy to find....at least around here.

The spa is a great idea.

You'll be fine Leia. Have fun.

Forget the beaches, they have really big crocodiles in that part of the world.

I'm naturally a goofball, not a romantic so ... yea ... I am sure we'll be fine .... :confused::laugh:

I hate how easy it is to get picnic baskets over there. It's even easier to get in Tokyo! It's not so much over there in Kuching cos local people love to prepare their own picnic basket!

Thanks  I think the spa idea is a great idea and way for us to ... bond with the massage therapists

There are no crocodiles around the beaches. In swamps, maybe but not around the beaches in Kuching ...:confused:

Well, that's good. Nothing can upset a beach outing worse than a 20 ft. Saltie. It's a shame that you can't get away from the city, Leia. A romantic weekend in a Cabana or Ryokan would be nice.

Well, Kuching's in my country, although I must frankly admit that I've never been there.

Caution about the romantic long walks on the beach - sunrise or nighttime is practically the only enjoyable time, if you've both not been to a tropical country before. Anytime after 10am is blistering hot especially this time of the year, and dusk is full of mosquitos. Also, try to aim for less-inhabited beaches, the typical tourist spots will be both dirty and full of kids in the morning, and old men and couples at night. ;)

If you both enjoy outdoor stuff and don't mind getting dirty/hot, there's lots of nature-related activities you can do together there - the jungle really isn't far from the city at all. River tours, jungle trekking... And I'd suggest you both try the local food instead of only hotel food (but bring activated charcoal pills along. ;))

Lol. Are you in the same country as I am??

This will be my first time in Kuching after many years living here. Then again, we move around a lot. I've only been back here for a few months now after a few years abroad and before Tokyo, I was here for a years and prior to that I was in Prague and everywhere else. I have yet to explore Kuching and other states! I remember going to The Pearl Island or Penang a few times and Langkawi, Terengganu and Kelantan. Other than those places, I haven't been around SEA much.

Yikes! I hate getting bitten by mosquitoes so we will definitely avoid going out after dark. I browsed Kuching earlier and Damai Beach seems like a nice place.

Bf loves jungle trekking so yea I might add that one to the list. We will try some local food. Bf is not a fan of Malay food nor Chinese. He's Iraqi and obviously, he prefers Arab food!

Speaking of food, I should look into a nearby Arab restaurant in Kuching!

Thanks, Elswyth!

Yeah, I'm native Malaysian. On the peninsula, though, never been to Borneo. :)

Wow, you sure get around a lot! I haven't been to Kelantan either. ;) Ohhh, it's a tad difficult to find good non-Malay or non-Chinese food in small cities like Kuching, though - you might get lucky, but otherwise the bigger places like KL have a much wider selection of international food.

I believe there are hot springs in Borneo as well, although I frankly have no idea where they are! Maybe you could go check it out. :) It's like a spa, except natural and outdoors.

Oh, and how about waterfalls and mountain climbing? Gunung Santubong is supposedly near Kuching, but I don't know how the facilities there are.

Boleh cakap melayu? :confused::laugh:

I'm back in KL this time. I can't see myself living in another state, to be honest with you! I was in Terengganu for 3 weeks last year for Monsoon Cup 2009 and after 3 days there, I wanted to come back to KL soooo bad!! I can't stand the food in Terengganu. Some are good but I can only have them for 2 or 3 days. KL is by far, the best city in Malaysia!

KL is full of delicious restaurants so yea, there's no shortage of Arab, Italian, Japanese and whatever food here.

I've been to a hot spring in Penang, and I would love to go again. I think the one in Borneo would be in Sabah. I'm pretty sure they have a few in Sarawak but like I said, we only have about 2 days to go around so I think it's best to stick around the city for this trip :(

I'm saving mountain climbing when we head over to Sabah. We were suppose to go early this month but too many things happening so we have postponed Sabah to the end of this year.

Well, the romantic things I want to do is not really just for this trip . I plan to surprise him more in the coming few months when we have some time to spend together. I don't want him to be doing all the surprises and romantic gestures :o

Tentulah boleh. Kami dipaksa belajar selama 12 tahun... :/

Oh gosh, you're in KL? Maybe we should meet up! :D

Oh yes, Mt Kinabalu is the best for climbing - good facilities, relatively easy climb and awesome scenery. :)

Yeah, probably the long walks on the beach and good food will be best if you've just 2 days. Touring can wait! ;)

Excellent! Haha.

Boleh! Apart from my cousin that used to post here, you're the only other one I know that is from KL!

I'm sure you're familiar with Mont Kiara then? I'm looking into moving to that area soon.

Yeaa, touring can wait. We still have a lot to plan for when his family visits in August.

I would really like to visit the Cat Museum when I am in Kuching but bf isn't a fan of feline. Maybe when he's busy with his conference [since mine is on the 3rd day there], I'll sneak out and have a look-sy!

I've been to Mont Kiara only a couple of times - tend to avoid it because of the traffic around the area. ;) Ironically, one of those few times was actually when the bf and I got lost on the way back from 1utama. Hilarious times...

Gotta run - but all the best in your planning, Leia, and hope you have a great time! ;)

Thanks!
