The other night I had a potluck dinner with lots of students from my building. It was an orientation, get to know everybody thing. I'm standing alone as I eat. This isn't an irregular occurrence for me, social situations really aren't my forte. But this girl is kind of wandering with her plate and stands closish to me. Close enough for me to be able to try talking to her. I don't know why but I got the feeling that she kind of wanted me to.

I mumble and stutter my way through what seemed like an awkward conversation. She is an exchange student from America and was telling me about where she had been in my country so far. I didn't really want to talk to her about this because I assume everyone does and it is probably boring for her now.

Turns out she is in the apartment next door. After a while she says to come say hi some time and then leaves saying she'll be back in a minute. Doesn't come back. Wasn't really surprised because it seemed like she was shutting it down with the come say hi sometime thing.

Do you think maybe interested or definitely not? I don't feel I can just wander over and say hi, so I don't really know what to do.

It's annoying that I can't talk to people. Around my friends I am quite quick but with anyone I don't know really well I freeze. But I'm kind of patting myself on the back for trying to talk to her.
