bluewolf17 Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 I try to keep my premade food to a minimum, but sometimes I do bring a "health" frozen meal to work, or a Progresso low fat/calorie soups. My concern is the sodium content. I am loosing weight, and I have another 30 or so to get to my goal weight. I wonder if I should be worried about my sodium intake? I drink A LOT of water, but does that offset the sodium? I sometimes wonder if all the sodium is still keeping me "puffy" even with all the water I drink.
2sure Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Sodium is bad bad bad. Makes me puffy too. I made the mistake of buying those very same soups for my daughter's lunches and then only after read the label. Way too much sodium . But I would like to know more. I dont cook with it and dont think we eat many prepared foods...but it seems like its just in everything.
carhill Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 2400mg (1 teaspoon, prox) is the generally accepted RDA for sodium in the US. This includes sodium from all sources, not just table salt. I know, personally, that I'm over that, and rarely add salt to food and predominantly cook at home, where salt content in foods is more quantifiable. One trick I've tried is non-sodium spices to 'pep up' dishes. How sodium affects your weight depends on how your body retains fluids. High (or even modestly exceeding the RDA) sodium consumption along with high fluid consumption can cause weight gain in some individuals. IMO, if you're embarking on a comprehensive weight loss program, getting a physical and consulting a doctor would be a good first step.
