These statistics include the last poster annxxdisaster but disregards one of the newer members responses due to the most recent rash of sock puppets and also, a lack of clarity in more than one response. Author threebyfate Posted February 26, 2010 Author Posted February 26, 2010 Hopefully polls like this, give men a more accurate picture of what women superficially want, when looking for relationships. It`s not the entire picture, since internals and other traits, affect everything. Like anything else in life, most women are willing to give something up, to get something they want or need, more. I`m a stats geek, mel!

hats Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 that is what i was hoping you were aiming for! i think this tidbit quite interesting: If you're surprised because it seems high you should remember that height will follow a normal distribution, ie there are way more people that exist within that height range than the others. I think the attractiveness stat is really interesting. At first I thought maybe you girls were just all egomaniacs, but now after thinking about it, it's probably because men have a stricter standard when it comes to looks. Great idea, really fun thread to follow!

hats Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 not to h/j- more so because there are normal height guys on LS that whine and moan that only tall guys get the girl... Well, I'm only estimating here, but if under 5'7" represents 10% of all men, 5'7" - 5'11" represents 80% of all men, and 6' and over represents 10% of men, then this survey would indicate that 80% of guys (the average height guys) have to compete over about 45% of the women and 10% (the tall guys) have their pick over about 45% of all women. So it's not hard to see how they come to that conclusion.
Author threebyfate Posted February 26, 2010 Author Posted February 26, 2010 Well, I'm only estimating here, but if under 5'7" represents 10% of all men, 5'7" - 5'11" represents 80% of all men, and 6' and over represents 10% of men, then this survey would indicate that 80% of guys (the average height guys) have to compete over about 45% of the women and 10% (the tall guys) have their pick over about 45% of all women. So it's not hard to see how they come to that conclusion. In 2005, Gallup did a random sampling of 1509 households by phone. 1/3 of the males were 6' and over, which pretty much equals what I've experienced throughout my life. To equate this to your logic, 44% of women are competing for 33.3% of men.
Author threebyfate Posted February 26, 2010 Author Posted February 26, 2010 I'm going to draw some generalized conclusions, based on the following statistics: Confidence: Yes, he was confident: 58% He was confident sometimes: 16% No, he wasn't confident: 25% Women prefer confident men. Height: 6' and over: 44% 5'7" - under 6': 47% Under 5'7": 9% Women prefer men who are taller than them. It's difficult to draw a conclusion beyond that, since there's a substantial percentage that prefer 6' and over, and the largest percentage, don't seem to care, as long as the man is taller than them. If you look back on each post, most who've had relationships with 6' and taller, have had relationships with less than 6' men. Looks: He was better looking: 12% She was better looking: 47% Par: 41% Women prefer men who are on par with them with looks but most are willing to give this up, for other, more important traits. Income: He made more: 39% She made more: 42% Par: 19% This one is interesting. The largest percentage of women aren't affected by the money men make. The next largest percentage, are women who prefer men to make more. Much less often, women prefer men who are on par with them.

To equate this to your logic, 44% of women are competing for 33.3% of men. Well it was a lot harder to track this stat down than I thought it would be but it looks like it's actually about 15%. FWIW I'm 5'11'' and don't see too many guys much taller than me, so it seemed a little high. "Top 15% percentile includes male American singles equal to and taller than 6 feet (72 inches) or 15 percent of male American singles are taller than 6 feet." - http://www.solvedating.com/american-singles-height.html (not sure when this was taken) "In the U.S. population, about 14.5 percent of all men are six feet or over..." - http://www.gladwell.com/blink/blink_excerpt2.html (I know this book was published fairly recently)
hats Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 This one is interesting. The largest percentage of women aren't affected by the money men make. The next largest percentage, are women who prefer men to make more. Much less often, women prefer men who are on par with them. Again this is probably more indicative of how unlikely it is that two people who make the same amount of money will meet each other, than actual preferences.
Lauriebell82 Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Number of relationships you're discussing in your post: 3 relationships Was he confident? first boyfriend was not confident at all, second boyfriend was confident, current fiance is mostly confident with some insecurities (about losing his hair) How tall was he? 1st was 6'1, 2nd was 5'9, fiance is 5'11 Who was better looking? I am better looking then 1st and 2nd boyfriend, fiance and I are about even I'd say Who made more, him or you? 1st and 2nd boyfriend were both in college, therefore we were equally broke. Nikki Sahagin Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Number of relationships you're discussing in your post: 2 Was he confident? The first was incredibly confident or at least he had a buzz of outgoingness about him but I suspect deep down was insecure. Second guy was the same and deep down VERY insecure. How tall was he? 1st guy was 6 foot 1, second was 5'6/5'7 Who was better looking? First guy. I've just realised you're asking who was better looking the men or me? I'd say me and so have most people. Who made more, him or you? Well i'm a student so first guy earned more, second guy earned less because when I did work I was earning more than him. I was put off by his lack of ambition and the way he blew the *little* money he had.
