Mr Nice Guy Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 What do you follow? AFL or Rugby League? Or Cricket? Sorry I couldn't help asking! I made friends with some guys from Perth and even Fiji through a local rugby club. A terrific way to meet people from the world, in my opinion. It's okay, thanks for asking; I normally don't get asked because people don't think I watch or play sport at all! I follow all of those "big three"...though maybe AFL and cricket a bit more than rugby. I tend get into it depending on what time of the year it is. It's funny that you should bring up Perth because that's where I'm from and where I am right now!! I agree its an great way to meet people, whether you support the same team or play the game, because you have something in common, which is always a good way to start!
Jersey Shortie Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I know a few girlfriends who love basketball, baseball, and ice hockey. I think their love of sports come from their dads. This is true for me. I grew up with a dad that loved the Yankees and Jets. My dad had season tickets to the Jets. My love for that team and football, come from him. I enjoy the sport, the skill, the high of your team doing well and scoring a touchdown or making an amazing catch. I mostly pay attention to the Jets and Ohio state, my brother's college team. Football was a way for my dad and I to connect. He was never going to be able to talk to me about girl things. But I could talk to him about football. And all those games we sat together in the stands talking about it bonded us and totally helped me to grow to really enjoy the sport of the game. When I was 12 and going to games I thought it was lame. But after all the years of going, I do appreciate the game. So my love for it is both because of my father and because I do enjoy the competition. Although, maybe not as much as some real die hard sport guy fans. But I am certainly not pretending I like it just to validate men. I like going to a sporting event. It can be quite fun.
cuppa Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 (edited) I got my love of sports from my dad too (and my brother). But my love for the old school NBA coming from my own I think. I remembered the time when I was in school and couldn't wait to go back home to watch games on TV. Soccer, likewise, my dad loves English league, I love Italian. I guess some say because Italian soccer players are better looking LOL. My dad loves Manchester United, I love AC Milan. We both love Juventus when Roberto Baggio was still there because we both love them. My fondest memory of my dad was when we used to watch WWF (now WWE) together, that's golden. Gosh, I missed him. The best time was World Cup (for Soccer). We used to watch it together (like a ritual) since I was 6 years old (1982 FIFA) all the way until I went to college. We used to be up all night and when my fave team lost, I used to be not able to sleep...yeah, it was that bad. So yeah, for all Dads here, if you have daughters, be sure to take her to sports events, you will be surprised on how she might really really like it! Edited February 17, 2010 by cuppa

Yep, that's how I got into it, by my Dad taking me when I was little. Now I take my kids (it was more me forcing them to start with), and I also watch them play in local team. I just don't have the capacity to remember 'facts and statistics' like the guys. I don't remember who scored what on what date and so on, I'm more emotional about sport, I can remember how much I enjoyed watching a game, but not always the statistics or whatever. I pay a lot each month to get the Sports Channels, and I go and watch games about 4 or 5 times a year, sometimes with the kids, but sometimes on my own too. I've met some great people and always had a brilliant time.
sunshinegirl Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Spectator sports, for the most part, bore me. I could really care less for the NFL, though I understand the game from growing up in a fanatical college football town. I find most male-dominated sports dull unless I am with someone knowledgeable who can explain why it's so exciting that player so-and-so is on the field, or why Team X's strategy is so interesting. As someone else said, probably because I've never played those sports. Now - participating in sports? That's a whole other thing. I love climbing, running, kayaking, hiking, roller blading...being active.
bella16 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 (edited) I am actually one of those few women out there who love sports like men do! Football and baseball are my favorites. I know the game as if I played it all my life lol. I will watch every NFL and College game I catch on tv, and most guys can't believe it, but they love that about me. My bedroom is decorated wall to wall with my favorite football team...when you'd really think it would be more girly lol. I am a girly girly though...but i've always had this love for sports in me!! I even watch the NFL Draft!! Its like a day I countdown for. I am like one of the guys when the games are on and ESPN is always on my tv...gotta love Sports Center! I like playing sports and I take kickboxing regularly also. Edited February 17, 2010 by bella16
Stung Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Personally I could give a flying F about watching sports on TV, although it might be slightly more entertaining than watching paint dry...and fortunately for me, my husband feels the same! However occasional sporting events in person are more interesting, it's easier to appreciate the athleticism, the drama. We go to basketball games occasionally as I played basketball in high school, or hockey because it's fun to watch grown men fight on ice. I know plenty of sporty women, however. I have several friends who are pretty avid about soccer and tennis, playing, going to tournaments, constantly blahbity-blahing about the World Cup or Wimbledon . I have a couple friends who are really involved in the world of horses, horseback riding, equestrian events, races... I go to the races with them sometimes and let them tell me who to bet on. I have another couple of friends who I can't even talk to during baseball season because it totally consumes their lives. My stepdaughter does Tae Kwon Do and Kung Fu and we go to tournaments with her, she's very into it...I do think they're interesting and actually I plan to start taking TKD myself pretty soon. I also know women who train pretty heavily in running and tend to watch and follow various running events and participate in marathons. I think my mom is the only woman I'm close to personally who is into American football, however. She's kind of rabid about it when the games are on and hosts Superbowl parties every year, but she doesn't sit around talking about players stats or joining fantasy football leagues...at least, not that I know of . Perhaps the true difference is the types of sports involved and their media popularity, or a simple matter of habits of self-identification?
1_trick_pony Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I'm a sport-o-holic. I play basketball and softball competitively and tackle football semi-professionally. Ironically I've never dated a guy that had anything but a passing interest in sports. Which has actually worked well. Sport is something I do with my friends and teammates, when I'm with my partner I want to talk about and do other things and stay diversified.
Author mortensorchid Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 I admit I am not a fan of sports, either watching them on TV or participating in the traditional ones that the guys like to do. I do, however, do my karate and the gym in order to keep my weight down. The only sport I watch on TV on occasion is UFC, because I myself am a martial artist. Outside of that, I have no interest in it. Recently, I encountered a guy who would talk about nothing but even though he fully acknowledged that his interests came from the fact that he played college football and all he did was talk shop about it with the other dumb, dirty jocks (his words, not mine). I tried my best to keep up with the conversation, but there's only so much you can talk about with a woman who has a passing knowledge if that. Just a thought for all you guys out there who have the dominating interest and want to talk about nothing but with women.
Rulebreaker Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I am a pretty non-athletic girl generally, but even I love going to live sporting events from time to time (mostly baseball). I also like playing cheesy team sports like dodgeball, kickball and flag football. I like volleyball too but I'm not good at it. I don't like to watch sports on TV.
