mortensorchid Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I've been checking out a variety of online dating sights. Men 99% of the time will say in their "about me" section that they love sports. This is a given that men love sports - they love playing them, watching them on TV, memorizing statistics about the players, etc. Women, in general I find, do not care for sports as much as guys do. We watch the games or go to the parties because we might want to be part of the group, but how many women out there truly love sports as much as the guys do? I thought I would ask.
calazhage Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 None.. When I used to online date I noticed some desperate women would put on their profiles how much they love certain sports.. I would ask the simplest question and they could not answer it..
EnglishMuffin Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I'm hoping that one day my boyfriend would watch a 4am International Test rugby with me Used to follow the Indy as well. Fun to listen to my guy friends' talking about the F1. I know a few girlfriends who love basketball, baseball, and ice hockey. I think their love of sports come from their dads.
counterman Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I like girls that love sport and I like talking to girls who do know their sports, though, in saying that, they're more likely to be my friend, in general, than be someone I would date.
skydiveaddict Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Hey fellas: She is asking fo the ladies opinions not ours. I think she already knows where we stand on sports
Twenty-ten Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Not that much I would think. But I also think men put it out there because guys who are really into sports need their time to devote to them and this is a way of preempting "I don't want drama because I want to go watch a game with the guys or because I want to play a sport a few nights a week and a morning on weekends." I have always been with men who were into sports so I know the drill. I get that they need their time for their sports and it suits me fine. Maybe some guys had girlfriends who had issues with this and they feel the need to preempt that it is an avid interest of theirs that does buy into their free time?
counterman Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Hey fellas: She is asking for the ladies opinions not ours. I think she already knows where we stand on sports touche I would say this though, out of my girl friends, there's probably one or two that really like sports and like to play them as well.
skydiveaddict Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 touche I would say this though, out of my girl friends, there's probably one or two that really like sports and like to play them as well. true bad mood tonight. sry
norajane Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Depends on the sport. I used to run and compete in a lot of 5K's. I used to be an avid figure skating fan, but have more recently lost interest. I go to a lot of baseball games, but that's because my company hosts a lot of client events at the ballpark a few blocks from my house. I used to be an avid Bulls fan, but I was really mostly a fairweather fan during their championship run. When I dated a guy who played on a softball league, I'd sometimes go to their games and cheer him on. I watch football in the winter, because winter here sucks and there aren't a lot of other things to do. I like hiking and when I lived in SF, did a lot of that. Is hiking a sport? So, I can say I like sports, but it's not necessarily the same sports a guy likes or to the degree a guy is into them.
Leia Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I'm into jet-skiing, paintballing, ice hockey and horseback riding. I'm not a fan of football, American football or basketball. I watch them but don't really care who wins. F1 is a family thing so I enjoy that as well.
Mr Nice Guy Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I know a few girlfriends who love basketball, baseball, and ice hockey. I think their love of sports come from their dads. This I can relate to. A girl I dated and am still friends with loves ice hockey with a passion, which is a sport her dad plays. She's Canadian and her dad plays in a league down here, though the leagues aren't very prolific or big because its not a big sport down here in Australia, but she goes to every one of his games. And she tries to follow the nhl, but thats hard for her since she doesnt get foxtel, which shows the games here. She often references her dad when it comes to local hockey, often telling me that she doesn't think the other players know who her dad is and that they're related. I like girls that love sport and I like talking to girls who do know their sports, though, in saying that, they're more likely to be my friend, in general, than be someone I would date. So do I: in every respect I enjoy talking to a girl who loves her sports and knows about the sports they're into. Half the time though, I've found it hard to get them to talk about it, even when they say they're into it. In a different instance the girl I mentioned above had her love for ice hockey, but when we were together it was hard to share it with her because she used to share it with an ex which made it hard on her because it reminded her of him. For me though, I loved listening to her talk about ice hockey when she brought it up because she was so passionate about it. But she found it so hard to talk about.
soulm8 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Well, my non-feminine interests include watching UFC and boxing, playing golf once in a while, and enjoying an afternoon at a raceway or show n shine to admire muscle cars.
Awesome Username Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I'm going to be honest about this whole sports thing. I love sports that are more simple and straight to the point like boxing and hockey (hockey can actually be complicated, I know, but for the most part it's straightforward). It's easier to figure out and pay attention to a sport that is engaging, active, and thrilling than more complicated sports like Football and Baseball. There is a reason for this: I don't play those sports. I can watch a football game and understand what's going on, sure, but I've never experienced the thrill of having a touchdown or the cunning ego-stoke of having a complicated play work for my team. I've never been seriously pushed to make a home run, and I will never be carried off of the field like Rudy. Some women who go out of their way to enjoy and play these sports genuinely do feel these triumphs watching it, but for the most part women are not encouraged to ever participate in anything but "catch" or something equally banal and simple. It's akin to makeup and dressing up for a woman, as sexist as that sounds. Men ultimately play sports to prove their prowess and gain the admiration of their peers and the opposite sex - women get foxed up for the same reasons. Here is an example: My father has dated probably hundreds of women in his life, and one day he saw me putting on my makeup. He looked at my eyelash curler and said to me, "What on earth is that?" I explained the process of putting on mascara and shaping eyebrows, and he was very surprised that women would PULL OUT some of their eyebrows to make them look better. I clued him in on the fact that nail places actually RARELY do nails - they wax off womens' moustaches. After being with so many women and being close with his mother, why would he in all of the years of his life, never know this stuff? The same reason women can watch football their whole life but not care remotely as much as men do - it's not a part of their world growing up. A lot of men think that their women looks amazing waking up, and that she only needs about five minutes a day to have perfect makeup on. He has never experienced the ego-boost that women can get by dressing up and getting attention, just like I've never experienced the thrill of a touchdown. But park me in front of some hockey or oldschool boxing, and for some reason the victory flows through my primal veins!
cuppa Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 but how many women out there truly love sports as much as the guys do? I thought I would ask. What? Quite a lot I would think. I do kickboxing, krav maga, crossfit, level B volleyball player (and I played badminton and pingpong since I was a kid too). In my kickboxing class, half of them are women. I grew up watching soccer and NBA (Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Larry Bird era, from Lakers - Celtics rivalry to Chicago - Bad Boys detroit piston till now). I even think I am a lot more sporty than most guys and when I'm passionate for certain sports (i.e: my love for AC Milan before), I know most stats than many guys out there. Certain passion fades (i.e: I no longer like MLB and NBA as much) but yeah, I think many women genuinely love sports and we love them definitely NOT to attract guys! or perhaps, my circle of girl friends love sports because we always go to gym or join a league together.
norajane Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 For myself, I disagree that it's an issue of not being able to identify with the thrill of victory or the competitive spirit or the skill. I'm just not invested in the teams themselves. I don't really care who wins or loses, so I don't really care about their skill, for the most part. If I sit down to watch with others, I can appreciate a great pass or a great double-play, but not so much that I want to spend all kind of time watching games. There's no excitement in it for me.

Although I, really dont consider it a "sport" , but most folks do.. A sport to me means "athlectic ability", hand/eye coordination, an ability to perform well where others cannot. Any idiot can (and most likely will), jump out of an airplane. I am a huge college football fan however. Edited February 17, 2010 by skydiveaddict
angelaM Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I would much rather play than watch, but I do love baseball. Although I can get interested in just about any sport/game when I care who wins. Except probably boxing. That sort of creeps me out. And I'm not crazy about basketball. I think they ought to just give both teams 75 points and let them play a quarter.

I'm not into F1 like my cousins are but since we all support the same teams, we usually have a BBQ at one place and watch the race together. That's fun and a good time to catch up with the relatives. I don't understand football ~ UK or US.

Crazy Magnet Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 During the fall, every Saturday, I will be parked in front of the TV from morning until night watching football. Any man who believes I will be otherwise occupied is insane. I follow my team religiously (went to five home games last year, and it's nearly a 5 hour drive for me) and I follow my conference religiously. SEC!!!! I think I was meant to be a nose tackle, but weighing in at 100lbs doesn't bode well for my chance at the draft! hahahaha While I cannot sit there and name every play or anything you won't throw much at me that I won't have a general idea of, I know what position does what, what team in the SEC has good this/bad that, I typically know all about the Heisman candidates and get very opinionated about the process, I get the BCS and also have lots of opinions on that. I know which players get drafted to where and then what happens to them. I believe in my profile I stated my love for my team right up at the top of the page. I find talking about football is a great ice breaker down here in the South. We live football down here! I'm already pining away for next year. I was an avid competitive swimmer, runner, and dancer. I enjoy watching hockey, but I don't know anything about it. Golf puts me to sleep as well as basketball. I of course like watching all sorts of girlie things like figure skating and gymnastics. I like to snow ski and water ski. I can't actually date a man who doesn't bleed the colors of his own home team, and I prefer an avid SEC fan as well. I LOVE the smack talk!!!
angelaM Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I cant agree both boxing and b-ball demand huge athletic ability Oh, no argument there, they are tremendously athletic activities. I just have a hard time watching people hit each other in the face, and basketball gets a bit tedious for my taste. But no question, they do require significant athletic ability. Now bowling, on the other hand (I realize you didn't mention this, I'm just thinking here)... I'm not so sure it's really a sport if you can do it with a beer in your hand. OK, I'm not a very good bowler.

AFL or Rugby League? Or Cricket? Sorry I couldn't help asking! I made friends with some guys from Perth and even Fiji through a local rugby club. A terrific way to meet people from the world, in my opinion.
Awesome Username Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Oh I forgot MMA. Check out these highlights from the human tank, Fedor Emelianenko: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDw3tUuoLpM He has no expression when he punches, which is rad. He also exercises by hammering a rubber tire with a giant hammer for hours. I like watching this kind of stuff.
