Britney23 Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 How often is normal/acceptable? My boyfriend and I got into an argument about this because he thinks its perfectly fine to only brush his teeth once a day, in the morning. I brush my teeth twice a day, morning and night. I told him it was disgusting that he didnt want to brush his teeth after everything he had ate that day. I told him that I would go home unless he brushed his teeth. By the way, he has had the same toothbrush for the past 2 years that I've been with him. I got told that I was being a nag and ridiculous, etc. And he told me that I should just go home if I was going to make a big deal out of something so small and that I ruined our perfect day together. I just cried and said sorry, I didn't mean to ruin everything. I just felt that if he cared about me than he would want to make that little effort that to me is just basic hygiene and I shouldnt even have to ask. He brushed his teeth anyway and we said we loved each other and went to sleep. The next night he brushed his teeth without me asking... But can you please just tell me if I should just relax and be happy that he does it once a day or do I have a right to be repulsed by this? Thanks
Johnny M Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 How often is normal/acceptable? Once a month if he's British...
whichwayisup Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 If he didn't brush his teeth in the morning, then you would have every right to be disguisted. Sorry, but maybe his upbringing in his childhood he never was taught to brush before bedtime. If his breath doesn't stink at night, then try to let it go. If he remembers, great, if not, let it go. It seems to be your issue though. If he doesn't change his ways, can you handle it?
whichwayisup Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 You can however, buy him a new toothbrush..
Hot Carl Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I brush at least twice a day and floss every night. I don't think you expect too much. That's the minimum anyone should do.
guy.lepage Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I think twice a day would be the strict minimum. Ideally one should brush after each meal as well but some people's teeth are easier to care for than others. My mom has been careless for years but yet she has the greatest teeth and gums. On the other hand my brother brushes 4-5 times a day and he always has issues.

You should you floss/listerine after meals, not toothpaste.
Author Britney23 Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 He's not british so doesn't have that excuse... Yeah I will buy him a new toothbrush. He has a spare one though that's in his travel case thing but he only uses it on holidays. That's the thing, I don't know if I can let it go. There are a lot worse guys out there and he has lots of great qualities so I don't want to break up with him over it. I wish he would just want to do it though without me asking. How do I get him to do that?
whichwayisup Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Then be honest. If this IS a deal breaker for you, then tell him when you sleep over, could he please brush his teeth before bed. IF he refuses to, or gives you attitude then you need to decide if it's worth breaking up and finding someone who is better suited for you.
Author Britney23 Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 Its not a deal breaker for me based on all the circumstances. He is practically perfect in every other way so I dont want to break up with him over this. Would it be a dealbreaker for you or anyone else if he/she was pretty much perfect in every other way?
whichwayisup Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Nope. IF he didn't brush in the morning, then it would be. Or if he only showered once a week, yes. But not brushing before bed? Not a deal breaker. Somehow you need to deal with this and learn to live with it, let it go. Don't nag him, that will just piss him off. why not have fun with it? When you brush your teeth, take his brush, lean over (and make sure you're naked!!) and brush his teeth. Let him play with your boobs or something while you brush his teeth.. Could be a fun little game before bed!
Leia Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 The same brush for 2 years?!? That's not good. Most people I know and myself change every 5 - 6 months. I brush teeth 2 - 3 times a day, floss every night and wash with Listerine. Whichway has a good idea
Author Britney23 Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 Yeah I change my toothbrush around about the same time. I'm probably due for a change now though. Whichway - what's the difference between morning and night? Yeah thankfully he showers once a day otherwise I would be nagging him about that too. I guess I could try your idea. He said if I had of reminded him to brush his teeth whilst he was in the bathroom he would have done it no questions asked. But because I reminded him after he had already layed in bed, he couldnt be bothered getting out of bed. So apparently it was my fault...

Brushing twice a day is not a big deal - and asking him to do such is not nagging.
skydiveaddict Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I find once a month is sufficient. Of course you have to use a stiff wire brush to scrape off that half inch layer of disgusting caked on, smelly filth that's rotting away your skull

angelaM Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Does it bother you because it's gross to kiss him or because his habits are different from yours?
Author Britney23 Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 Both reasons but mainly because his habit is different to mine I guess. I thought that brushing twice day is the norm and I find it gross that he doesn't do that. Also, because I feel like he doesn't care enough to want to impress me anymore. I'll still kiss him though cause his breath isn't bad and when we wake up I figure that my breath is probably bad by then too. Least he doesn't smoke and not brush.
anne1707 Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Once a month if he's British... He's not british so doesn't have that excuse... Enough of the stereotypes please!!!
