blueberries Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 welcome to nyc! i moved to the city not too long ago too. i'm not much of a party-er, but i hear there's so many venues and events that you're bound to meet people. what i found so amazing about nyc is that the majority, if not all, of the folks i've met have been extremely kind. i remember when i first moved to nyc, random people in manhattan would offer their help, whether with moving my luggage, suitcases, directions etc. they would stop whatever it is they were doing to help me. so i'm not sure how the city got it's reputation, but i feel it's false! also, may i suggest volunteering for some sort of organization or event. you can meet a lot of people that way, i'd imagine.
OnlyJake Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Can't say I've been yet, haha You need to go. You'll thank me.

I realized this too... I've found people here to be friendlier (even if standoffish) than those even down in Texas. Feels like the reputation is backwards to a certain extent.
Lindarose84 Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Where exactly are you meeting these "friendly" people? While there are the exceptions (usually transplants), as a native NY'er who has lived in other cities, I have found that overall, people here are some of the most rude people I have ever encountered. It's ridiculous how shoving people without so much as an "excuse me" is common place here. It makes me want to bash people's heads in lol (as you can tell, I can be the mean NY'er myself if need be )

It makes me want to bash people's heads in lol (as you can tell, I can be the mean NY'er myself if need be ) I bought a computer chair and carried it back home -- someone opened the subway gate for me so I wouldn't have to do it myself. Same goes for my apartment -- people are generally nice when it comes to holding the door open/making pleasant conversation in the elevator (typically people don't want anything to do with you elsewhere). I have, however, been bumped before on the sidewalk quite hard without the slightest "excuse me/sorry," but that's the only incident so far I can bring to mind. I've only been here for less than a week, so I imagine my opinion shall continue to form. XD Unrelated note: It's snowing!

My experience was different, found NYers to be cool and approachable, men and women. Still contend OP is about to hit a really hard working wall where his main problem is budgeting time for socializing.
