Right and running/jogging burns the most calories in the shortest amount of time.

You were the one that brought up her risk for joint damage if I recall. I think you just like to argue...

We agree, yay!!!

I'm shocked.

Step 1 - DIET - You need to eat ONLY high quality food. Anything marked "low-fat, low-cal, low-carb, etc," is actually WORSE for you. The ONLY food you eat should be organic or close to it - you should recognize all the ingredients on the back. Margarine is worse than butter, nutrasweet is far worse than sugar, etc. You have to get with the program and eat REAL FOOD, in reasonable amounts.

Step 2 - EXERCISE - Cardio, cardio, cardio! Go walking for at least 30 minutes every day, do mild weight lifting twice a week. Take up some form of social dancing; it's fun and burns a lot of calories.

Step 3 - DON'T CHEAT - remember, natural foods only, no fast food, and quit buying this stuff that says it helps you lose weight, because it doesn't. All of that synthetic GARBAGE is actually far worse for you than the natural substance it was meant to replace. Eating fat doesn't make you fat - eating carbs, sugar, and synthetics does. Do you put toast into a toaster? No. You put BREAD into a toaster and you get toast. You get what I'm saying?? The fat you eat doesn't become fat in your body; the SUGAR you eat becomes fat in your body.

There's no shortcut. Just get with the program and eat right, exercise often, and don't cheat.

I completely disagree. whole milk is not "better for you" than non-fat when you are trying to loose weight. Regular soda is not better for you than diet when you are trying to loose weight.

The artificial sweetener myths have been debunked for years.

"Organic" is a fad that allows grocery markets to charge $2 for an apple. There is no certifying body that governs whether a product is "organic" versus "non-organic." It is a marketing ploy.

You shouldn't be drinking soda at all, it has no nutritional value.

Artificial anything is bad for you. Actual food is the best way to go. I wasn't referring to milk. I was referring to margarine vs. butter. Margarine is made up of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, which has been statistically proven to be FAR worse for your body than ANY kind of natural fat could ever be.

You don't have to eat organic, but you do have to eat not synthetic. Go to safeway and look at the ingredients on a bag of bread; it will be a paragraph long! Go to Trader Joe's and the bread has 4 ingredients. What the hell IS all that other stuff? Do you know? I sure don't... It's all preservatives and synthetic stuff that's trying to make the label look more appealing by saying it has low fat, low sugar, low etc. Meanwhile, the substances that replace the sugar, fat and sodium are twice as bad for you.

America has an insane obesity rate because we eat all this crap (like soda) that has no nutritional value, and stupid people think they're being healthy by drinking diet soda and eating low-fat cookies.

lol, I love it, and you're dead right.

It's been proven time and again that if you want to lose weight, you need to increase your BASELINE METABOLISM. Baseline metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories, even when resting.

Weight lifting has been proven to increase baseline metabolism and cardio FOR EXTENDED PERIODS (30 minutes or longer per session) burns calories.

There is no shortcut. Quit crying and take your ass to the gym!!

Start slow, and be constant, push your self but gradually. And eat less and more often.

If you had read the article you would have realized that I was correct.

From the article:Weighing In on Knee Pain

The number one risk factor for OA is excess body fat--a problem most runners don't have. Sedentary, overweight people are 45 percent more likely to develop OA than those who are active. "The more you weigh, the more pressure is placed on the joints, which seems to accelerate the breakdown of cartilage," says Patience White, M.D., chief public health officer for the Arthritis Foundation. Since losing weight is one of the best ways to prevent OA (losing 10 pounds can take about 45 pounds of pressure off the knee)

Op has an excess of 450 pounds on her knees. Is running a good idea? No.

Did I suggest the OP step out the door and go for a run? No, I only suggest that the it is a false assumption that RUNNING causes OA as your earlier post suggested. It is inactivity with extra weight that appear to have a greater influence towards the affliction.

So true! My gf blew out her knee swing dancing, years ago. When I met her, her knee would get so sore she'd be on vicodin all the time.

Over the summer she joined team in training and went on all these super long walks. Now we can go swing dancing for hours and her knee doesn't hurt. She just needed to train it up again.

I can't remember the last time I saw her take pain pills; she doesn't need them anymore.

It wasn't the injury that was causing her pain - it was the stiffness from not exercising it for years.

Thanks GC

I think you missed my point, but I didn't exactly make it clear.

I appreciate the links. My point was an observation on references, sources, you get it:cool:.

You don't have to be so rude.

Running/jogging is actually one of the less efficient exercises for burning calories...

Weight training and high intensity cardio (sprints, interval training, etc) will burn more calories in a shorter amount of time...

You know it almost doesn't matter what you do as long as you get off your ass and do consistently.

Your original post said Organic, this post is more about "clean" eating, which is what I suggested. But I completely agree with what you are saying here. I don't think that our bodies can even process the hydrogenated vegetable oils that are in margarine.

I disagree about the diet soda issue. I drink diet soda because I enjoy the taste, and I need the caffeine. Diet-soda's effect is insignificant other than the increase in sodium.

High quantities, carbonation in diet soda, as in all sodas, can cause significant deprecation of potassium in the body. Which can have number of genitive effects.

And there is studies that suggest diet soda increase appetite.

Moderation is always good.

I heard diet soda is worst than regular.

If anything, if you can just stick to water, that would be the best. Even if you do get a certain craving, go for a low carb mineral water, or just tea w/ lemon.

At least tea detoxes.

Speaking of " organic" the only way to truly go " organic" is to go raw. That's about the only way that you know all your foods are unprocessed and natural. Nowadays, even veggies has small amounts of chemicals in them.

You are definitely right about " clean" eating. However, most people on a diet aren't tolerant towards eating without " processed" food without going through a detox phase. That means lots of hunger pangs and cravings. After the initial phase of " detox" that's when a person can really stick to clean eating. Even then there's still the temptation of wanting to settle down with a snack.

It's all about choices, and the OP's ability to differentiate wanting say a McD's or a homemade salad with fat-free dressing.

You are so right! It's funny to watch people go for a McDonald's salad, load it up with this disgusting dressing, and they think they're being healthy!

I use one rule for clean eating - I look at the ingredients to see if there's a paragraph of words I can't pronounce, or a very short list (4 or 5) ingredients I recognize.

This is a good example of BAD FOOD. Look how many ingredients there are - for simple cookies?! Don't cookies have like 6 ingredients when you make them at home? Doesn't it make you wonder WTF all that other stuff is?

And here's a good example of good food. Look at the ingredients - I know what all of that stuff is, nothing I don't recognize or can't pronounce. It's just food.

Ok.

I've lost 40lbs since last april & probably have another 20lbs to go before my love handles go away.

I started with working out.

3 / day split.

1 exercise per body part for 1 warm up & 3 working sets.

I cut out junk food. increased water intake & protien intake.

took at least 2 protien shakes a day.

No carbs after dinner.

Except fruit.

After my body stopped hurting so bad from lifting I switched to 5x5 program.

5 sets or 5 reps with the heaviest weight I could handle. 1 exercise per body part.

Protien shake before workout & after. 2 more protien shakes per day. Lots of chicken & veggies along with a mutli was my diet.

After i got some muscle mass I have switched to circuit training & 20 mins. on the treadmill.

By now i can eat smaller meals & not feel like i'm starving.

Still on 3 protien shakes a day because I want to keep the muscle I have.

But deffintely lifting weights to burn muscle is key. The more muscle you have the more calories you burn at rest.

Now granted I did manual labor regularly I just ate & drank way too much so I was basically a fat strong guy.

Eating far less and then starting to exercise - is 100% the solution. When you have a lot to lose a lot of it will almost fall off if you do this. Straight forward, hey! But the real question for you is to work out what caused such a major tendency to overeat in the first place - as I suspect you already know that eating less and exercising will work, but there is probably something psychological there that causes you to break all the rules.

Also...the diet version of soda is SO MUCH BETTER than the regular!-so opt for that every time.

Pyro... how would you feel about putting together some sort of program for me? You obviously don't have to, but i'd love to hear what you had to say...

I lost 87 lbs in about 6 months by training to walk a marathon. Check out the following website for details:

Also, if you want to map out a walking route through your neighborhood, you can do so by going to the following website:

Good luck.
