PhillyDude Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I had a proile on a site date.com but never had a membership. So I noticed for weeks I always had a message but never could read it because I needed to pay for a membership. So I finally decided to pay for a membership and as soon as I became a member I did not one receive one message. Which I found very strange because I would get a message ever other day when I wasn't a member. $30.00 down the drain and I now know how these dating sites work.
sid3 Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I've read here quite often about the emails former members of Match would get once their membership had expired or was winding down. In fact, when I tried that site several years ago, the same thing happened to me. It's sad but both men and women can get scammed by a majority of the dating sites. Online can be pure paradise for the morally bankrupt, because of the high volume they make tons of money and seldomly are they persued. I guess there isn't much they can do to thwart the indivudual scammer, but you would think they'd want to protect the integrity of their site by the manner in which they do things, like the '1 new emaill msg' again due to the high traffic they obviously aren't worried about losing a customer as there will be a new one to replace him/her in no time.

That's what happened to me on Match. I'd get emails from when my membership was expiring, and even when it did. One time I stupidly renewed because some guy sounds really cool when he emailed me (they could email but I had to renew to email back). Long story short he was a married man looking for sex.

Exactly, why would you want your site to come off as fraudulent. I didn't waste any time in canceling either because I felt that after 8 days I should have had more than 0 messages-lol

I just told my female friend who signed up for match and is now thinking of purchasing a membership because she received a email from ONE GUY-lol I told her not to do it because it's not worth it for one guy but I think she is going to purchase anyway.

It wasn't worth it for me. I know there are positive stories, but there seems to be more negative now.
carhill Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I used Yahoo simply because it integrated with the other Yahoo services, free and paid, that I use. Simple and painless. No issues, a number of contacts in both directions and I'm seeing a lady in real life whom I met on there, for a little over a month now. I'd probably have had more contacts if I hadn't put 'separated' in my profile, but that's the truth. Uneventful and no spam to speak of. Sorry to hear about your experience.
phineas Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I've got a blank profile on match.com just so I could see what's out there. The free one. Get e-mails all the time. It's a blank profile with no picture. I've browsed a few of the sites just to see what's out there. It looks grim. LOL! I've met more people i'd consider dateing in real life.

carhill Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Anyone who lives in a large population center and works outside the home has no real reason for online dating IMO. You're out and about in the world and surrounded by people. I can work a week and see only my cat and a few grizzled farmers. Online dating makes sense for me. The subscription is far, far less than I'd spend just in gas getting to civilization on a regular basis, essentially one month's subscription for two trips to town.
