gorgeous1 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Just been given this awesome book called "The Secret" all about the power of attraction, kind of attracting good into your life through positive thought. Hoping it will work with me after my bf of 14 months has been cyber cheating on me for so long (see my post in cheating forum). Its a great read and I will try anything to turn my life/doomed relationship around!!!
counterman Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I have no idea what they book is. But, I would be interested in some of the ideas that may be presented in "The Secret" - is there anything you would like to share particularly? I am sorry that your ex-boyfriend cheated on you.
Tony T Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 The book has been out for several years and its secret is hardly a secret anymore! It works for some people BUT only if they truly believe it will work for them.
meerkat stew Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 IMO, a far better treatment of the concept is Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill. The Secret is actually a dumbed-down version of that book for the lazy-minded. The Secret basically strips all the thought out of Think and Grow Rich, leaving only feel-good nonsense. "Growing Rich" can be in any aspect, wealth, friendship, romance, power, not just money.
Rulebreaker Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I think the Secret video is fun to watch because it borders on the absurd and you can't really tell whether and to what extent they're taking themselves seriously. My only experience with the Secret "working" was to concentrate really hard on a letter I wanted to receive, and then I received it the next time I checked my mail. Could have been a coincidence though. The shortcomings of the Secret include one of the same thing I'm struggling with now with the Rules - basically it blames you if it doesn't work. That's convenient, isn't it? The fact is, you cannot will someone to be with you, and you cannot will things to happen. But you can have a positive attitude and send vibes for the things you want into the universe, and there is not much to lose by doing this. Despite my experience with the specific letter, I think it works best for more generic thoughts "I want LOVE" rather than "I want THIS PERSON." If you're interested in the Secret I would also check out the movie What the Bleep, and the book Feeling Good (cheesy title), the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy book, which is all about neutralizing negative thoughts. The Secret is in some ways a touchy-feely ripoff of this.
Mr White Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 (edited) this book, "The Secret", is the ultimate sign of the absurd proportions that the american entitlement has reached. It's message is basically that as long as you want - and think about- something sincerely, and long and hard enough, the Universe will rearrange itself to suit you and give it to you :lmao:, then peppered with some spiritual bullshet. Can we get any more self-centered than that ? Surely, if one is focused on desiring something it is likely to actually happen insofar this focus may result in taking the appropriate steps (conscious and unconscious) to achieve it. But all these feel good books go waaaaaaaaay beyond that. "You're okay, you deserve it, just want it strong enough and the universe will give it to you..." sort of thing. torranceshipman Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Yea The Secret is waffly crap in my view...positive thinking is within everyone's capabilities - you don't need a book full of cheesy quotes and 'spiritual' advice to do that.
