Yes. be afraid

it's the starches that I'm scared of; rice, potatoes, bread, ect, ect...

Be very afraid

Normally these poisons are coated with grease to give them flavor; Ummm...dare I say, Cheese

I hasten to say, this cheese can also be knawed "like a rat." And the smell can be ....... attractive  to some of the stranger specimens.

Alright, I'm done screwing around. :)

Let's get back on the topic, before we get punished! :D

Just another fad for people who want 'magic solutions' to problems.

What I'd do if I were you....I would do the 14 day induction stage of Atkins (that gets you totally off of sugar and carbs)......you'll for sure lose 10-15lbs of water weight (that will mentally and physically get you excited to go for this for a long haul!) then stay on the diet for about 2 months or until you lose at least 1/2 of your weight you want to lose.....start introducing healthy carbs (as you will anyone on the Atkins diet) but don't ever go back to over doing it with the pasta and sugar. Eat lean meats and drink a lot of water and work out at least 3 times a week.

I don't think Atkins can be done practically for a long term period, you can incorporate it into your diet and life but it's just too strict to live on the rest of your life, especially if you are the only one in your household living on it. Refraining from as much sugar and refined foods as possible is a very healthy choice BUT just eating meats all the time isn't completely healthy or practical in daily life. Another thing you have to consider is the size of your meals. I'm not saying fast foods are good for you but as an example of serving sizes...a Happy Meal from McDonalds is enough in serving size for an adult!

About fast foods. These are making America OBESE the fries, the double huge cow size meats then the KING KONG size meals....they are not just making us fat, they are killing us! If you must have eat fast food, there are plenty of choices (not just Subway) of lighter meals you can choose from!

Replace your white breads with wheat. To feel full, eat fiber! And drink as much water as possible and exercise for at least 20 minutes, 3 times a week. If you add weight training, in about 4 months your body will have toned and changed dramatically!!

Also it's good to get another person to diet with you, like a spouse or friend. Weight watchers is good if you need moral support and total guidelines on how to eat!! There are so many resources for people to lose weight, get in shape and healthy! Utilize them!!

ONE KIDNEY PERSON!! The Atkins diet is not for you!! They even mention people with kidney problems, along with pregnant women and they don't recommend people on chemo to get on this diet!!

My father swears by the new low carb fad. He's sixty years old and his blood work last month was the best it has been in his entire life. He never told his GP that he was going to give it a try because his doc is against fad diets. But he couldn't resist when the doctor asked him "what have you been doing?"

The doctor frowned, but didn't caution my father against it. Although he was a bit surprised by the results of the blood-work, he told my father to continue whatever it was he was doing, but to make sure he was supplementing with vitamins.

Not sure if I'm sold on the idea yet, myself. I'd have a hard time giving up my mashed potatoes. :o But for anyone interested, the Food Network (on cable) is suppose to explain how the whole thing works tonight at 10:00PM eastern.

I'm just hoping they cover both the pros and cons equally so that people can make an educated decision.

Young and hopeful, when I was posting I couldn't figure out how to view the other posts and forgot your name!! But I really wanted to make sure you knew what I'd heard and read concerning the kidneys and any protein diet. As I'm sure you know, too much protein isn't good for the kidneys or at least for diseased or weak ones. Since you go into a state of ketosis (I think I spelled that right) you will be urinating like crazy during the induction stage and that wouldn't be advisable for you. But you can still cut out very starchy high in sugar carbs without going so much into the protein and still lose weight! ;)
