- a date on the beach with champagne, caviar and quail eggs?

- a date consisting of a racquetball game followed by a dinner?

- a trip to a paintball facility for a couple of games, followed by a dinner?

- staying in for a gourmet-style dinner (cooked by him), movies and cuddling?

someone who is really down-to-earth and not about appearances?

To me except for the first one those don't seem like dates but more activities one would do for their hobby or for exercise.

Not that those aren't good things to take your GF or even a girl you have been dating a while but dating is about getting to know someone.

How are you supposed to get to know someone if you aren't even in the same vicinity ?

Nothing wrong with a date at the beach but if you were down to earth it would be fried chicken or something for dinner rather than quail eggs and caviar.

PERFECT...

If both parties enjoy being active, why not?

Well, I'll be moving to CA soon...

down-to-earth does not necessarily equal not classy. Agreed, this one stands out a little but why would you ruin it with fried chicken???

I'm sorry.. I meant like in paintball you both are not even near one another.. that isn't conductive to conversation and getting to know someone.

or in racquetball.. the closest you get to looking in each others eyes is if you collide.

If both people are active it still doesn't mean you should try and get to know someone thru activities that aren't full of conversation..

Rock climbing would be an activity that you would be conversing constantly with the other person and their climbing buddy so that activity would work for a date.

I agree with the above. Paintball as a date is kind of exciting but I agree it does not offer much in terms of conversation and being together.

To clarify: everything I've mentioned are rather low-key dates. That's what I am asking for.

Maybe you could clarify further? First of all; it all depends on the girl, for what kind of date she would be interested. Not all CA girls are created equal.

Second, to me, "low key" is NOT running around playing paintball or another sport; low key is a picnic on the beach, etc., so I'm not sure what you're asking here either.

So I'm confused exactly what your question is. Can you be more specific?

What part of California? A lot of those beaches are dirty and/or really cold and windy so the beach date ends up being not as romantic as it seems (I've lived in San Diego, Los Angeles, Redondo, Long Beach, and now San Francisco).

I'd take the first one in a heart-beat. But also consider that the same sentiment can be had in a secluded park and in the bleacher seats of the Hollywood Bowl.

But I'm with the others that raquetball and stuff seems like too much exercise and a harder way to get to know a girl. Here you want to talk and learn about each other, not sweat and run...

It certainly depends on the girl. Not all of them are all about money and status...

I may come off as insecure but I prefer rather small whole-in-the-wall coffee shops to upscale restaurants, I'd prefer rock-climbing to the Getty center etc. and this doesn't sound like LA dating scene :)

I agree that these aren't really dates except for the last one -- and that's not really a first date activity.

How about just meeting for coffee and a walk on the beach/boardwalk (if there is mutual interest?).

Doesn't have to be something complex and definitely don't want to go over the top, especially on a first date.

I think Califorinia women must love this

Sensually devour each quail egg while making intense eye contact, it totally gets California girls gushing

I'm not talking about the first date. First date is definitely coffee and chatting!

Second date is some sort of activity and a dinner...

It's just I am VERY active! Sports are a lot of fun and I think if both parties enjoy being active then playing racquetball gives an opportunity to have some fun together. Getting to know each other is okay but also having fun together is important.

A good second date activity is making quail egg mayonaisse in a food processor

This thread is so silly. The purest of speculation. I'm sure there are women everywhere who would enjoy any of those. And women everywhere who would enjoy none of them.

My suggestion when you're contacting potential dates is to be very clear that you're an active person and want to date someone who is also very active.

Look for runners, hikers, workout-a-holics, girls who play sports, etc.

In other words, don't try and date women who are passive about outdoor activities. Couch potatoes are bad for people like you and me. Meeting girls at the gym might not be a bad idea for you.

As a native California girl, I'm into the second and fourth ideas. I like the idea of doing an activity together prior to a meal, and homecooked meals are always nice!

In my experience, eating on the piece isn't nearly as fun as it sounds, particularly in the winter. It's often cold & windy, and sand has a tendency to get into everything (your clothes, food, etc). I much prefer a nice dinner followed by a walk on the beach to watch the sunset or look at the stars.

:lmao::lmao::lmao: I'll be moving from Minnesota. When I was visiting LA three weeks ago I went out to get breakfast in a T-Shirt and shorts (it was low 50s) and people all around looked at me as if I am crazy!!!

To any Californian, anything below 60 is cold & worth complaining about. :p People start wearing boots & pea coats when it dips below 70!

Uh, wrong. That's only for those in SoCal. It's 37 where I am right now in NorCal. :p

As for activities in LA that are active and "date like": Go for a hike in Runyon Canyon.

I am sooo looking forward to being in LA! There's gonna be so much to do in terms of outdoors! Plus I'll be able to get the tattoo I wanted to get for a long time but was always afraid to get it in TC since it's in kanji and there are no Japanese tattoo artists around here...

Sailing! Beach volleyball! Hiking! I guess CA girls appreciate active men as girls everywhere do...
