Vertex Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Due to a shift in work, I will be moving to NYC soon -- any advice regarding things to do for a 23 year old in the city, even regarding dating? I have a fair number of friends living in NYC from college, but I don't want to rely on them to have a social life.
BobSacamento Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 1. Go to Manhattan 2. Pick a direction 3. Party There is just so much to do. I personally like to bar hop. I go down there for work sometimes and it's always a blast. The bartenders are top notch and you can talk to them for a while if your into that. I talked with one who came over from Scotland. Also, you can walk for about 5 minutes and see a handful of attractive women. It's the best City hands down.
A_guy Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Omg there is so much to do!! What isn't there to do is the question. I can recommend a few places.
xpaperxcutx Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Museums, parks, bars, etc. This question is redundant. There's alot to do in NYC.

You're lucky you have friends who live there already. When I moved here 8 years ago, I knew no one! I spent my first two years trying to find my social life.

When I moved here 8 years ago, I knew no one! I spent my first two years trying to find my social life. I guess I should clarify I have a few friends... none of which I know super well. People from my school or coworkers, basically. Most of my good friends are not living in NYC. Hence the lack of social life and my impetus for creating this thread, haha.
A_guy Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Well, what would be a fun night on the town for you?
Author Vertex Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 I am not sure I am into the bar scene, only because I'm not really the kind of guy who just approaches random people and strikes up a conversation about something out of the blue. I enjoy being social though, and I enjoy partying. The problem is that I enjoy doing things with people I know well, but this is of course a problem when I know nobody. :/ In general though I enjoy doing anything with friends (going to events, parties, movies, etc).

I have a fair number of friends living in NYC from college, but I don't want to rely on them to have a social life. Join the alumni club there, the one in Midtown. good networking and young professional events, even dating events cosponsored with other clubs. Having lived in NYC and surrounding areas. If you want to date, I suggest living IN THE CITY because for some reasons women think Hoboken, NJ in general, Yonkers, and Westchester County as to far in distance. It is very easy to meet and date women while you live in the same "city". Some parts of Queens is farther than Hoboken. Go figure! Regarding things to do, there is ALWAYS something to do 24/7. You want sushi at 2am you can find in. You want caviar at 4am on a Sunday, you can find it. You want to take your date on a helicopter ride at 2am Saturday, you can do it. So be very careful what you ask for.
Author Vertex Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 I definitely want to live in the city, but I worry that finding an apartment is going to be hell.
Itzo Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Due to a shift in work, I will be moving to NYC soon -- any advice regarding things to do for a 23 year old in the city, even regarding dating? I have a fair number of friends living in NYC from college, but I don't want to rely on them to have a social life. I lived in NYC almost 4 years There are so many lonely people there ... BIG cities = BIG loneliness, it is very counter-intuitive, but it is true. So if you hang out on clubs you will always find something. You better have big wallet there ... it is not very cheap in Manhattan. I am not talking about speending money on girls or dates ... in general, it is not cheap Top spots for hot girls: Around Madison Square Garden on 34th street and 8 ave. You can get 2 train to get there. Eleven Madison Park on 23th street and madison ave. (great for the summer) you can get 6 train to get there In restaurants, there are very hot, hard working + lonely women. In every street there is a restaurant. Columbus Circle on 59th street is a great place to meet women. You can take 1 train to get there. Get in the Time Warner building ... you will find great places to hang out. About NYC, keep in mind that almost 80% of the people there are tourist from all over the world. There are not many americans there ... people with accents all over da place You know in NYC, people are just passing by you all the time. Remember in NYC there are two main sides .. the East Side and the West Side ... the line that separate both is 5th avenue. This is very important to know. if you see something like 49 W 35th street, NY this is on the West Side. When you take the RED Line (1, 2, 3 trains) you are always getting to the West Side while you are going to Manhattan ... whereas the GREEN line (4, 5, 6 trains) are going to the East Side of Manhattan. It is very easy to have some sense of direction there. I know New York City, better than my HOME town here in Bulgaria I had great time there ...
Itzo Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I definitely want to live in the city, but I worry that finding an apartment is going to be hell. Find an appartment via craigslist.org (NYC) http://newyork.craigslist.org/ This is how I found my place to stay there.
Author Vertex Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 How much do you pay per month personally/how are your living conditions?
Itzo Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 How much do you pay per month personally/how are your living conditions? I lived in Bronx ... some people find it dangerous ... but it is just a dry talk in my opinion. Are you are going by yourself there? If you want to rent an appartment (2 rooms). Some of the cheapset ones were about $1000/per month and UP. If you are going by yourself, you can rent a room ... but living with other people, like sharing appartment or house ... it is a little spooky, cuz you do not know these people at the beginning. .. but I tried that so it is fine ... If you rent a room, is like minimum $400 per month ... and the room will be like a dirty hole As the prize increase, the quality increase. I lived in Bronx, paying $525 per month. The students in the next house to mine were paying $800 per month for 1 room.
Itzo Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) In Queens & in Bronx is cheaper, as well as Brooklyn. The closest destination to Manhattan from all the cities around Manhattan is about 15 min. with train. It is a big traffic jam, if you get a car. I had friends who were paying for 2 room appartment $2500 in Manhattan per month ... which is the MINIMUM. Edited January 30, 2010 by Itzo
Author Vertex Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 Like I think $2k/month is a bit steep for housing... I wouldn't want to go that high. Maybe $1500 max? Does that get me anything reasonable in the city or am I still looking at living in a sardine can?
Itzo Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) Like I think $2k/month is a bit steep for housing... I wouldn't want to go that high. Maybe $1500 max? Does that get me anything reasonable in the city or am I still looking at living in a sardine can? For something like $1500 you are going to have a "sardine can" in the City. For $1500 in Queens, Bronx or Brooklyn you will have a lot better condition. The cost is not static ... I had a deal with my owner ... without contract, without deposit ... she was very nice ... and I hit it low price for 2 rooms in Bronx and $525 per month. I did not share rooms with nobody ... there were people in the house, but I was on the second floor, so there are many opportunities in the City, when I say $1500 in Manhattan you will get a sardine can appartment, it is more likely to happen ... but not 100% so I do not to discourage you Think about it, the cheapest hotels in Manhattan in one night are $100. You can probably find something cheap in the City, if you look for it. Many people in Manhattan rent an appratment that is a high-cost for them, so they are looking for other people to share the expense. This is very flexible, in terms of cost. I came from Florida, there was nice & clean ... but when I get in NYC ... the housing there were expensive for a sardine can like this. If you get something outside Manhattan, if is closer to Manhattan the MORE expensive is ... so the cost is set by the location to Manhattan. Further form Manhattan the cost goes down. It is a business Check the craigslist link I gave you, and you will get the feel in terms of housing expenses. For the Big Apple, the best way to get a house or an appartment, without knowing anyone in the city is Craigslist. Edited January 30, 2010 by Itzo
Author Vertex Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 I feel like as long as I've got access to the 1/2/3 lines, I should be just fine, really. I'm not sure I want to be living TOO far away from the city -- I'd be far too lonely. I'm already a pretty shy guy.
Itzo Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 If you pay $1500 per month, most owners will ask you for a DEPOSIT ... that will be returned to you, when you move out This deposit is the same as the RENT you are about to pay per month. So let say, you pay $1500 .. then you have to pay another $1500 deposit that will be returned to ya, before you leave. Ah of course 2 weeks notice, before you do that. I got my owner, she did not ask me for deposit, neither for a contract. I advice you to stay away from this commitment.
Author Vertex Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 Is the "no fee" the no deposit equivalent that I see on these postings?
Itzo Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I feel like as long as I've got access to the 1/2/3 lines, I should be just fine, really. I'm not sure I want to be living TOO far away from the city -- I'd be far too lonely. I'm already a pretty shy guy. Shy guy in the big city .. hmmmm .. this will be challenging ... Yeah ... I mean I lived in Bronx, there was an option to use the green & the red line, because of the location of my house. It was very convenient to Manhattan, it was about 20 min. with the train. Get a job in the restaurant business .. this is the best way to talk to as many people as you possible can, you will get to know the spirit in the big city when you do so. Then show some interest in the girls there. You may get some nice chicks ... you know. Mostly the girls there are LONELY like HELL. Another options to meet girls is to go through the college campuses, now is the winter session ... so you may go at Hunter College (CUNY) using 6 strain, to I do not know 68th street or something. It is on the map. I was a student at City College in Uptown. Big campus a lot of unexperienced girls
Itzo Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Is the "no fee" the no deposit equivalent that I see on these postings? Some owners ask for proof of income or something ... I do not know. Every owner has different expectations & rules. When I was looking for housing .. they ask me for a deposit ... if you DO NOT provide it, you cannot move in. Let say you have to pay $1500 per month + $1500 per month ... or $3000 to move in for the first month. If you find something cheaper, better ... the cheaper it is the more like a hole looking will be ... So that's why I said to keep this in mind.
