Years ago, I once dated a fighter pilot for a short while. He was nuts, reactionary and ballsy. He was also the lead singer for a band.

The interesting part of this, was that if you just looked at him in a pic, he wasn't incredibly hawt looking, when wearing civvies. Regardless, women still fell all over him. Crazy man, lots of fun and excitement but not someone you would or could rely on, in a committed relationship.

I really think saying you are a Lawyer, Doctor, Architect ect. turns women on more. My friend who got shot in Afganistan doesn't seem to be doing great in the ladies department. My family who was good with women before the military still is good now that he is a veteran... so i think it doesn't really matter, just as many women will be turned off as on. I mean it sounds better then I work at walmart or I clean floors at the highschool

What if you were both...?

But looking at the responses, I can see the general appeal of someone in uniform, as it represents what that person's likely character traits are...not to say that a good majority of servicemembers aren't upstanding citizens, great family men, and honorable and loyal partners...but there are certainly quite a few bad apples that only exude and obnoxious cockiness, overconfidence, and dishonesty...

Still worth it...? Or is it that whole "bad boy" image that's so appealing...?

Since I'm in the Nat'l Guard, usually the only time I'm in uniform is during training on some army base or in Afghanistan blowing things up or shooting at bad guys, or getting shot at. Personally my uniform has not attracted anything but bullets and mortat rounds to me. I bet most of the guys in my unit would say the same thing!

I was never into military men AT ALL but my current boyfriend is actually in the army reserve - one of the many job he has! I didnt know this until we had spoken a few times online though, and when he told me I was slightly put off thinking he would be a typical player - this is sooo not the case with him though.

He does have all of the positive traits though - good stance, great body, stong, fit, handsome, confident, very polite and gentlemanly.

In fact, interestingly with regards to cheating - its actually the wives of military guys who are prone to affairs/leaving their husbands who have been deployed. My guy said that he has seen this happen a lot in the group of soldiers he works with, because of this he has an irrational fear that I will stray when he goes to Iraq in a few months. We are long distance anyway though, so this wont be much different for us.

Also...

Im from the UK, and from what Ive seen the military guys from our country seem to have the worst repuation for all the negatives such as commitment phobic, cheating and heavy drinking/being very rowdy.

Lots of women desire unavailable men, whether it be a married guy, a guy who wants no commitment, or someone who is gone for long periods of times. I have noticed, that the military wife type needs the uncertainty, needs the away time, and would be miserable with a guy who returns home every night, working as an accountment. It's fear of total commitment and the drama of uncertainty.

You have to be HIGH status for being a professional to impress women. I am a low status lawyer, and I haven't gotten laid in years...

I never understood the uniform thing. The only guy I ever felt attracted to that was wearing a uniform was some guy dressed as Data (Star Trek:NG) for Halloween. Obviously, I wasn't even attracted to him but the idea that he was Data. :o

I just get a kick out of the guys that strut around with their chests all puffed out because they're servicemen. It's funny to me because they think they're better than everyone, but really I don't envy them one bit. None, whatsoever. Really, the military is just a job. A job you don't have to interview for, btw. Yes, there's physical exams, but you aren't competing for a position based on any other skills. Yes, you do put your life on the line sometimes (depending on your assignment), but you're taking orders from a boss and getting paid, just like everyone else in the working world.

There are tens of millions of people in the service industry that many would argue do just as much if not more to help society as a whole. Social workers, farmers, engineers, teachers, doctors, researchers, contractors building public infrastructure... I could go on and on.

I also don't envy the relationships many of these guys get in. If a woman is turned on solely by the military aspect, it's bound to come crashing down eventually. I'll even go so far as to say some of these women need the external validation and attention provided to them because they married a serviceman. If a couple is going to be together and have a healthy relationship, it won't be affected by the guy's military status.

/ducks in preparation for the flaming I'm about to get for disrespecting the military

I actually agree with many of the points you made, and it was my basis for starting this thread. The military really is just another job...but you are wrong in that you do compete for jobs and assignments. It's actually exactly what you do...the top performers in each class of each school get their pick of that they want to do...but that is beside the point.

You're right about those guys that are all high on themselves just because they're military...I do get a kick out of those young enlisted folk that go out downtown in their service uniforms to try to pick up ladies...yet the weird thing is, it oftentimes works!! And of course that only serves to further their egos and puff up their chests even more...

That's why I'm curious...are these guys legitimately more attractive to women...?

And you're right, military relationships are some of the toughest kind to maintain...

Wow! Omg...he was my idol! All the way up until fifth grade, I tried to be like him! Then, I decided to be like Hatshepsut and Queen Elizabeth I. Still, I try and use logic when I can. I have to pay homage to my original mentor. ;)

Wow...omg. :) That's cool, though. That would be a really great pick up line...if you knew a woman was a Star Trek fan. ;)

Very true, and those that do move up in the ranks and are responsible for other's lives do deserve tons of respect. I could never make snap decisions like those guys have to or relate to the men like they do. I was mainly referring to the younger guys that couldn't find direction in their lives and joined the military to fill that void. Although you could argue them doing that is better than being a burden on society like many other young men end up being.

There's this one guy from my h.s. that flunked out of college so he joined the Marines. I saw him out at the bars around Christmas time and he was the biggest douchebag there. He must have just gotten a big paycheck because he was dropping $100 bills like they were hot and just being an ass in general. I tried making conversation with him because he was there with mutual friends, but he just gave me this smug attitude so I didn't even try any more. It just made him pathetic like any other arrogant prick you encounter on a night out.

With that being said, one of the nicest, most humble guys I know is a recruiter for the Guards. You can tell he's proud of his service because it has meaning to HIM. He's not doing it for validation. That guy has my utmost respect.

Because they are gone frequently and might eventually die leaving the woman with his military benefits.

Yep, you definitely have your share of good and bad ones...and I was also referring to those young fresh boots that just got out of basic training and feel like they are suddenly leaps and bounds above their peers. They seem to carry this arrogance and attitude with them throughout their careers and lives...

But this attitude also seems to be appealing to women at that age (late teens, early 20's), so these young servicemen play on that appeal, and the women just eat it up...

On the flip side, you do have A LOT of fantastic individuals in the military...those that would make great friends and family men...

I'm not that big of a poseur, my limitation is wearing MSG shirts because I at least worked at an embassy and they gave me one... My dad got the rest from his embassy visits...

I thought about getting a tat, but then it would just prove my point that women love bad boys.

Hahah, cool. And in this day in age, I don't know whether you can necessarily associate tattoos with 'bad boys'...they're just so common now...but that is neither here nor there...

Being in the miltary doesn't make a man more appealing to me. If anything, I may become less likely to date him. I'm not interested in having a serious relationship with a man that I wouldn't be able to see that often due to his job. Whether he is a truck driver or in the military.

I'm dating a guy in the army.

The fact that he is in the army is the least appealing thing about him. When we started dating he didn't even tell me because he thought I wouldn't be into him if I knew right away. He was right. However, he does not fit the stereotype AT ALL. The only reason I decided to continue dating him is that he isn't a lifer. He has a contract then when it's up he's out.

The one plus I see from the army is that it made him grow up fast. He is super responsible and very respectful at a young age. If we broke up I would never date military again. It really sucks when he's gone.
