brock9911 Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 i have ocd and can get severe anxiety attacks, but at the same time i can and will snap, become violent at times. and it subsides but than also comes back...either way my psychiatrist has made me get my blood taken for tests and has put me on 1000 mg of Depatoke...i need to know what side affects people have suffered from this...now iv heard 1000 mg doesnt offer many because its a low dose but can someone, if any give me some advice
sedgwick Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 I gained 40 lbs on Depakote, which is common. Weight gain is one of the biggest complaints. I've never heard of it being used for OCD before!
Author brock9911 Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 well their putting me on what they call a low dose for my mood swings 1000 mg...i have a tendancy to get very angry, or irritated for little or no reasons...from what iv read im hearing that its only used in low doses to balance out a persons moods and higher doses for seizures...im really nervous about taking it, i just recently lost 25 lbs, i have an active life and a healthy eating style, but i have this nagging earge it wont help
cdt76 Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 I take it. The other side effect is that you become very sleepy. I have to take it at night. Other than that, I haven't noticed anything.
Author brock9911 Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 im just becoming very nervous that the doc is giving me something other than what i need...i understand i have severe anxiety which is mostly caused by ocd...and i understand that before i even had this condition i would have severe anger outbursts and still due to the point where it scares everyone including myself...im supposed to stay on this for 2 weeks and see my doc again and discuss this a bit more...i was just all out of sorts when i had seen her and was literally in the middle of a mental colapse
cdt76 Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 It is an anti-anxiety med. It will stabalize you and get you off the emotional roller coaster. It works. You are taking a higher dose than I am and it works for me. Just use it. The OCD is something else entirely. The anger and outbursts can be controlled by this med. Use it and you'll see.
nobmagnet Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 trust the doc. it will be worth it if it works wont it?? just imagine your head slowing down for a change? some kind of inner peice. Try it darling you have nothing to lose Nobby xxxxxx
Author brock9911 Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 thanx...cuz the obsessing has just been growing about the weight gain itself with is a pain in the ass...iv been more comfortable and confident with my recent loss of weight...i really dont want to gain it back...and is it necessarily the meds that make u gain or is it just the chronic need to eat and eat. iv had the urge many times, but iv controlled my eating habits and not to mention the fact thatt now that im not drinking that should also help...i would drink approximately 6 times a week and on average id say thats 1500 calories per night i was taking in. with my already good diet and excercising i hope the weight gain doesnt happen
dashing daisy Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 I used to take Depakote. In the beginning it made me really tired, I would pretty much fall asleep within an hour of taking it. Also I had to take it with food, and wait at least 30 minutes before lying down, or I would get heartburn. Other than that it was fine. It is used as a mood stabilizer, so there is a good possibility it will help you.
Author brock9911 Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 they want me to take this in the morning and at night...2 250 mg pills in the am and 2 250 mg pills at night...i will be groggy all day, have a huge increase of weight from all the readings iv found, and how will it help with my ocd?
sedgwick Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 It is an anti-anxiety med. No, it's not. It's an anticonvulsant also used as a mood stabilizer. There are plenty of newer and better drugs -- both mood stabilizers and anti-anxiety meds. I am baffled as to why any doctor would go to Depakote as a first-line med unless s/he was clearly looking at a case of severe bipolar I in the manic phase.
Author brock9911 Posted January 28, 2010 Author Posted January 28, 2010 well regardless of what happens these next 1 1/2 before i get a chance to see her again im not gona start this medication...my friend who also has many of the same issues as me, even though i know its not the same for everyone, basically guinea pigged himself to every medication there is...the depatoke he told me was one of the worst he has taken...it didnt concentrate on his ocd or anxiety and he said in order for my multiple problems to be met its not gonna lie in one magic pill...he personally takes lithium, tegretol, and trazadone...my ex who i have been speaking with stuck with her lexapro and is now also on abilify...when i was religiously taking the lexapro i was ok with the anxiety, but the depression wasnt fully gone. and i have a feeling a lot of my irritability and mood swings comes from this. i think these doctors are so quick to qualify and diagnose people bipolar without doing proper evaluations. im being told the depakote makes you gain substantial amounts of weight along with groggyness and lazyness which i specifically told her i didnt want...so against the docs wishes i am not taking this med till we meet again
