Since the break up I've been saying that I cannot envision myself with another man - but I was looking to get a dog. Well I have finally been approved to adopt a rescue dog, and he will be arriving tonight - I am very excited :bunny::bunny:

However I've also had a few teary eyed moments. My last dog passed away in August - of course I was devastated. I kept saying no way would I get another dog on my own, that I would wait until ex and I were living together.

So now I'm all teary eyed because this was supposed to be OUR dog.

I know I am doing the right thing. and I know having this precious pooch to focus my love and attention on will do wonders for my recovery. But I can't help but think of how much better it would be with him. I might know intellectually that this is actually not true, but emotionally it's how I feel.

So yippee for me that I'm getting my new pup - but OMG why do even the good things have to hurt?!

That's so great that you're adopting a rescue dog! My cat was a stray I took in off the street, and she was malnourished and dirty. It was cold, and I put her inside my coat to warm her up. It was an hour-long subway ride back to my place, and she snuggled against my chest purring the whole way. By the time we got to my apartment, I was totally in love with her -- I had planned to take her to the shelter the next morning, but as I was cleaning her up and getting her into the cat carrier, I started crying. That was 11 years ago, and at this moment she's sitting a few feet away drinking water with her cute little pink tongue.

I think once you see your dog you'll be so in love it won't matter that your ex isn't there. Just focus on spending the next couple of days getting to know your NEW love!! (And by the way, if you live anywhere near the East Village, Urban Vets on Ave C is fantastic! Tiki, my kitty, just had major dental surgery there, and they took great care of her.)

Thanks Sedgewick - Indeed rescuing is a very rewarding thing. I found my cat on petfinder.com - which is a site full of rescue animals. She's been with me about 6 years and it a total love. The dog I lost in August was also a rescue.

My ex did not believe in rescuing because you didn't know what you were getting either gentically or experience wise. I understand his point, but I do not believe it outweighs the need to give homes to existing animals vs breeding mre.

So reality is that there is no way THIS dog could have been ours - I guess I just continue to get teary eyed that I can share stuff with him anymore.

Thanks for the vet recommendation - I actually moved to Bergen county NJ a couple years ago - so now I have a vet out here.

Thanks HOH - yes I'm very excited he's young and we know his entire history - so nothing traumatic. I'll try to post a pic over the weekend.

Is that where the community college is? I had no clue - the vet is there though - huge vet hospital, I figured hey I want the best of the best and those guys have ALL the newest tools (like MRI, etc)
