I thought I was over her, then a song brings me to tears.

I have been broken up with my ex for over 5 months now. I had been doing so good. I even stoped missing her so much. I still think of her everyday, but now it's not the obessive "oh my god why don't you love me anymore" thoughts.

Well I was on iTunes buying songs and came across Gordon Lightfoots "If You Could Read My Mind". I bought the song thinking nothing of my ex but then I actually listened to all the lyrics and it brought me crumbling down. I feel week.

By the way, she contacted me via text asking if I still didn't want to talk to her. Needless to say I never responded. But after listening to this song it makes me miss her all over again.

Neat song...never heard it before...

It happens to me ALL the time. For me it's 'Already Gone' by Kelly Clarkson.

I could literally feel my heart breaking up all over again because it reminds me of the entire relationship with my ex.

I still have a bunch too. The worst is when they show up on the PA system in stores! I think musical triggers are the last to go. But then when the day comes that you're able to listen and realize it doesn't affect you at all, you're really there... on the other side.

First, to the OP, I'm sorry you're hurting again. That sucks, but it happens to all of us. Music is such a powerful trigger! I LOVED old-time music, and I met my ex because he played it, but now if I so much as hear a fiddle I run screaming in the other direction. I passed through a farmer's market last summer with a friend, and there was an old-time band playing, and I made my friend hold my hand while we walked past them!

That said, music can also be a great barometer for knowing when you're healed. My worst ex ever, who was so abusive and evil that my friends and I now refer to him simply as "Sh*tnugget," wrote an article about Prince in a magazine, and I emailed him to tell him how much I liked it. That's how we got together, by bonding over our mutual adoration of Prince. Now, I have loved the little man in purple since I was in junior high, but when Sh*tnugget and I broke up I couldn't listen to him at all. I was SO mad! But then, about six months later, a friend surprised me with tickets to a Prince concert and I forced myself to go. I had a great time, and as I stood there drinking champagne with strawberries I realized I didn't give a sh*t about Sh*tnugget at all!

So yeah, I have Prince to thank for many happy moments in my life, but that one was the best. :)

Oh i hear you! Yesterday I was scrolling through facebook and one of my friends posted the lyrics for a song my ex dedicated to me before he moved....

I've never heard the loud sound of shattering heart as I did last night...

I feel like music often says what we have a hard time verbalizing ourselves so thats why its so powerful. Personally, when Im feeling that vulnerable i escape at the hint of any song that might bring me down like that

I had to delete this song from everything I own. Whenever I played it we went crazy on each other .

I used to play this song on my guitar to my ex and it made her cry one time.

Everyone will cry after watching this...so sad:
